Lightbulb Replace Rear Brake Hose

I couldnt figure out how to replace the rear brake line, the part I got doesnt match whats on the vehicle...on truck its more of a curved end (brass valve) and the part I got is rectangular...also there isnt a place to install the rear proportioning valve rubber tube that comes off the back of it on the new one.

Did I get the wrong part? It was listed as a rear brake hose.

This is what I bought to replace the rear brake hose. http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/Ca...851_0336598389

Ill try and take a picture of the one on truck today.

Any thoughts?

I like this site:
ShowMeTheParts - Automotive Aftermarket Electronic Catalog

They show the part that you bought as well as some others that look a little different. Put in your vehicle information and see if any of the pictures for "Brake Hydraulic Hose" match what you have on the truck. For Product select "Brake Hardware."

I don't see any problem with the hose you linked to. The hose is held in place on the axle housing by the axle breather. That is a fitting that looks like a bolt but has a rubber hose going to it.
You didn't specify what your truck is, but here's how mine looks installed.
Note, in the picture I haven't hooked up the two hard lines that run to the wheel cylinders, I have a couple of plugs in the fitting to keep dirt out.

My question is how do I change that rubber brake hose?

Is there a trick to it that Im missing?

I have a 77 ford F150 400 2wd. My setup looks exactly like yours...just a lot dirtier.

Unscrew the two hard lines at the axle housing, unscrew the hard line that comes from the frame, slide the retainer clip off, unscrew the axle vent. Install in reverse order.
EDIT: On the retainer clip. It holds the top end of the hose in the bracket. You can just barely see the top of it on the other side of the frame bracket, its on the hard line side of the bracket. Its a horseshoe type clip and just slides in place. To remove it just pry it off with a screwdriver.

Ill give it another look in the morning..

I just dont see where the end of my new brake hose goes on the axle.

the brass valve on the axle on the truck is shaped different.

I'll just follow your directions and see where it takes me...

I feel like an idiot cause it seems like an easy job especially after the complete overhaul Ive done to this brake system so far.

Thanks for the help Mike, you always seem to be the one who offers the best info. You're the man!

I cant thank you guys enough, had to re-bend some rear brake lines since they didnt want to come out of the valve. BUT got that done, and replaced rear brake hose!

Im such an idiot, for some reason I kept thinking this new fitting on the hose was part of the stock part since they were shaped different...understanding that the whole part is removed with brake hose was the key. Thanks again!

Glad to see you got it fixed .
Don't beat yourself up, we've all been there, even those that won't admit it.

Lightbulb Follow-up

First off, thanks again guys for the help!
If we lived locally Id have you guys over for beer and ribs!

Quick followup question, while Im overhauling this brake system I decided to change out the Master cylinder, I will wait on the power brake booster till I can afford it...unless of course it makes the most sense to do it all at once?!

So I bench bled the master cylinder and plan to swap it out today, is there anything more to the process besides just removing and replacing? Anything else I can do to update while Im in there? change any o-rings? do I need anti-seize on the brake lines going into new MC, or teflon tape?

Once I change out MC do I need to bleed entire system at wheels?

One last question. the parking brake cables coming out of the rear drums was brittle and prob 37 years old so I popped those out and replaced them but Im having an issue getting them connected to metal clasp to hold them, is there a trick to adjust these to make them fit?

It should be strictly a bolt on operation. On the never-seize/teflon tape. I wouldn't use never-seize because you don't want to chance contamination. The "oil" in anti-seize compounds isn't compatible with brake fluid. The teflon tape isn't necessary. The seal comes from the taper on the flare and the seat in the fitting it screws into. The threads don't figure into it.
On the e-brake cables, if they're the correct ones, it should all just fit together. The only adjustment there is, is where the two cables hook together.
