BRAND NEW ... and broken
Hey everyone,
Last night I just traded my 1979 Ford Bronco for a 1995 F150. It was a great trade as I only had about $1500 into my bronco. The F150 I got has a solid axle swap with Dana 60s, Fox Racing Shocks, 40 inch tires, newly rebuilt trans and a sweeet CB radio ... only one problem,
Last night when I was driving it home from Springfield IL I got about 70 miles from home and the oil pump went out, starved the engine and it exploded. It is a sound I will never forget as you could hear pistons and metal flying around in the engine (will post oil pan pics when i pull it).
Now it looks like I am going to be swaping in a new engine. it is a 302 right now but I think I am going to swap in a 351w as many people on here have said its not to difficult. I am planning on buying a re manufactured engine and maybe puting a little more agressive cam into it.
Where is the best place to get a reman engine? I have been checking out the ebay companies and talked to Mabbco out of Texas. have a budget of about $2000. This truck would not be a daily driver and only used to go to the hardware store and maybe a few off roading trips a year.
Thanks everyone.

Nice looking truck. Have you thought about finding an engine and having it rebuilt to your specs? I would think you could pick up a complete engine for a couple hundred dollars. Have a machine shop rework it then assemble it yourself. That would free up some cash to upgrade stuff. That is if you had the ability to do it.

I have never done an engine swap, and while I believe I know how everything works and have the tools to do it ... I am a little worried to build my own only to screw something up and have the same problem again. Any ford guys in St Louis that have ever done one? Ill provide all the beer to anyone who is willing to stand and point at things that need to be done

So I think I have found my engine. a 351w from Mabbco out of TX. With the flat top pistons (9.4:1) and double roller timing set it would be $1900 delivered with no core charge. they said that i could also get a more aggressive cam (yes please) but I would need to do some computer work .... what does that mean and how much does it cost to have one of these computers reset to handle that?
Also If I get this long block and buy an intake and new flex plate, what else will I need for the swap? I couldn't find any technical write ups on this swap but instead just a bunch of people saying it was an easy and well worth it swap. thanks,

$2000 351w does not equal the $5,000+ needed for the full rebuilt 4BT swap ... believe me I have thought about it. i just want a simple swap that has the best of both ease and price.
I can put in whatever i want but i still have to follow the basic rule of attributes. you only get to pick 2 lol.
1. Reliable
2. Cheap
3. Powerful

That truck should have mass air anyway, can you confirm? There would be a Y in the intake tubes and an alumimum piece inline with wires connected near the airbox.
If it does then no computer changes needed for a mild 5.8, however you will need a complete 5.8 intake and distributor for the swap and a 5.8(28oz) flexplate to match whatever trans your truck has... see the trans code on the drivers door pillar.

yep thats mass air, you can do pretty much whatever you want as long as youre willing to pay for a tune.
just an idea, you could find some pretty modestly priced aluminum heads both new and used. heads and cam would definitely help moving that truck around.
of course, the absolute cheapest route is the longblocks referenced above, but for an extra 1-2k you could unlock 100+hp over the factory setup.
