Hello everyone. I am new at this. I just bought a 53 f350 with a holmes 400 Wrecker. This is the truck of my dreams. I had it shipped up from Denver CO. to Canada. I need some help with getting new rims. Mine are 6 lug 7.25 bolt, 17" Widowmakers

Welcome to the site, sounds like a heck of a truck. I'm not learned up on the widow makers, but there is a lot of information on the subject here. I can't remember how many posts you need before you can search, but once your able to i will reveal a plethora of information.

6 bolt 17s are a pain.get a set of 19.5 rims remove the centers ..put your 17s in and have them welded ..best way out ,,done it on my 54' tires are better and cheeper then trying to use the widows ,,,,and everyone her will give you grief for them ..welcome to the clan !!you can see the rims on my truck in my gallery ,,sorry don't know how to post here..

First, add my welcome. Great to have another big truck being saved, and a wrecker at that.

That thread that 38 coupe linked above has the tech info that applies to your truck. You have two basic options. First is custom wheels as Ken described. The center of a 17" widow maker should fit nicely into a tubeless 19.5" outer rim. If you don't want to trust a local welder to do this as Ken did, there are custom wheel companies that do it commercially. One that I know does good work is American Wheel Specialist of Pasco, WA.

The other option is the 17.5" x 5.25" wheel described in the linked discussion. I don't know of any full sets now available. I know of two wheels in an Oregon yard, and maybe four in a South Dakota yard, but pulling them together will be a hassle for all involved. I have a yard that I work with and have recently asked the operator to keep his eyes open for a set of these, but nothing yet. Your most likely short term fix is a set of custom wheels. Stu

 

I have six 17.5's on my parts truck. Stu helped me find buyer, but the guy sold his 'Craigslist find' motorhome a week after it got shipped to him. This guy gave my name to the new purchaser, but haven't heard from him. So I guess they are for sale again. Not too sure about shipping across the border. But I also love to see the big trucks get saved, and I don't need another project for years with all the needy orphans I've already gathered.

 

Thanks for the update, Gary. Seems like reality dawned on the Travco guy once he took delivery and saw what he was facing. I give him credit for cutting bait before he got in over his head. Hope your set works for 53 Tow, but if not I'll keep them in mind for the next emailer. Stu

Here's How to Post Pictures:
1. Login to FTE.
2.Click User CP (In the Top Left Hand Corner)

You can add up to 30 Images in one FTE Post.

It seems awkward, but whenever you "insert a picture" to one of these threads, the forum is looking for the picture somewhere on the web (which is always available) rather than from somewhere on your hard drive (which isn't always available).

On a '53 both the SRW and DRW have 5.00" offset even though the part numbers are different on the wheels. No sure why that is. The DRW 17.5s have 4.75" offset and the same coined mounting. They work on SRW and DRW '53/'54s. In 1955 the SRWs were changed and have only 1/2" offset iirc. Stu
