It was even originally Bechtel yellow too!

 

Deutz Diesels are great engines. I used to work on them years ago. As I recall, the F5L-912 is around 90 BHP and weighs close to 800 lbs.

 

Is this Deutz chain driven or gear driven?

Timing chain wise....

Was this a factory built truck or created in the aftermarket.

When I was in Germany as a young GI, ca. 1969, my girlfriends Dad had a Deutz tractor with an air cooled engine. It was a honey, but I don't know how well it would work in a really hot climate.

I was recently helping on some waterline we were laying for our Veterans memorial. A friend of mine showed up with an ancient Ditch Witch that had a three cylinder Deutz.

I can see where it would have worked quite well in Alaska. That is as well as any diesel can operate in an arctic environment.

 

Very neat truck. Don't worry about the Deutz overheating if it can get air to it. They'll run all day in 100 degree + temps, stationary applications, tractors.

 

I have had my Lincoln ClassicII welder for over twenty years. That three cylinder Deutz has carried me through California Central Valley pipeline jobs at 100+ and even spent one winter in Skagway at the coal dock when the wind was howling down White Pass at about a forty below wind chill.
As long as it has a battery that thing will run and I get about forty hours out of a tank of diesel. They are remarkable machines.

 

A bit of info on the Duetz 75 Crew

The Deutz conversion was a $8,000.00 option way back in the day.

The 912 Is still being made by Deutz in multiple configurations

Pretty neat how the Deutz is mated to the trans and then a drive shaft runs back into the transfer case a couple feet towards rear.

With a bit of tuning it no longer smokes! Maybe a bit when you rev it.
Ran out of fuel on test drive but just add fuel and it cranks right up! Unlike a late model diesel where you burn the starter up trying to get it going.

This truck has the F5L912 Its rated 100HP and 300 something tq

Word is in a truck or van it will give 30mpg when tuned properly.

The rear axle was toast and patched, the 4.10 gears were gone. Stole a gear set out of a '66 F250. Only diff was the spline count on the yoke, used the '66 yoke and a 369 Precision u-joint.. Dana 60 parts are expensive . . Yup a factory Limited Slip 4.10

 

Oh yeah, Almost forgot they came with a 300,000 mile warranty!

That diesel would be a cool tow rig for the monster truck.

 

Have a deutz engine in a roller at work, probably the same engine. Thing runs like a clock, rest of the machine is falling apart but it always starts.

I'm curious about your power and economy as well. The Deutz has a better Cool factor for me than a Cummins, and I think I know where there are a couple near me. Also when you get to it, what is the truck using for a tranny?
