That is the open system style. California trucks, at least, could come with a closed system for emissions.

C3TZ-9600-AA (replaced C1TZ-9600-M) .. Oil Bath Air Cleaner / 12.68" O.D. x 4.57" high / Obsolete

Applications: 1961/64 F100/700 292 / 1965/67 F100/350 352.

T/E = Thermactor Emission (smog pump) introduced in 1966 FoMoCo vehicles.

Only 1966 F100's w/240/300 I-6 & 352 sold new in CA were required to have it.

T/E has nothing to do with the air cleaner.

Pics in post #3 show oil bath air cleaner with PCV, smog valve located in right (passenger) side valve cover.

ND: I asked the question because I believed - until I saw the photo - that the "closed" system air cleaner was used only with the thermactor system. In any event, the air cleaner with the nipple at the front is a rare bird, and probably not used on 65's.

It was used on CA vehicles, possibly other states as well.
PCV introduced in 1961, was mandatory in all sold new in CA vehicles.

T/E introduced in 1966, was mandatory in sold new in CA Passenger Cars, Bronco's, Econolines and F100's.

Today, CA smog tests 1976 and newer vehicles, anything prior is exempt.

That is the one I'm used to seeing on the right side. Never saw that hose to the top before.

Yeah John, I think that is what Mark expected to see.
Number Dummy says all California F100's had the one with the hose. I guess he would know. I've seen it only once - on my '66 which has Thermactor.

This was off a '65 with a 352. Decal is from Dennis Carpenter.
