Ignition Control Module Life Expectancy - '94 F-250 5.8L
My ignition control module is mounted in a heat-sink frame on the fender wall, close to firewall. Have no idea if it's the original, if they last that long (196,000 miles), or not. It does say Motorcraft on the module, but I've only owned the truck for 5-years. Maybe it's already been changed.
Anyway, if I do go ahead and change it, are the non-Motorcraft parts OK, or do I need to shell out about $150.00 for Motorcraft.
My only experience with an ignition control module was on an '82 LeSabre Limited ( never should have sold it!). Anyway, Don't know how long the original lasted on that vehicle either, but the Autozone ignition control module for the LeSabre only lasted about 2 years. Since then, I've been buying KOI parts here Southwest Ohio, whenever possible. KOI is just a parts house that has a better reputation for parts, compared to the Autozone-type houses. Sometimes the parts are the same, but sometimes not.
I do buy Motorcraft parts also when I can afford 'em.

No they are not in this case, I routinely gather Motorcraft TFI modules off cars/trucks in the scrapyard because they outlast aftermarket modules by a wide margin. I have only replaced 1 ignition module on my Ford trucks over 20yrs.

Thx for all the input y'all.
I'll stick with the Motorcraft then, and I'm thinking I'm gonna do what I did with that ol' Buick LeSabre... leave it be and keep a spare ignition module in the vehicle. Was easy to change on that ol' LeSabre o' mine (inherited it from my Dad), and looks easy enough to change on my truck, if it goes out in an inconvenient place... as if there's a convenient place.
