Hey y'all, I need some help with the carb on my '72 F250 with the 360. My problem is, I can let it sit there and idle for as long as it wants, but as soon as I start to part RPMs on it and it starts to come under a load, it dies and I get a puff out of my carb. Doesn't matter how fast or slow I put the pedal down, I always get the same thing. Any ideas as to what my problem is? I have an understanding of how a carb works, but I know nothing of proper mixes or needle adjustments. I'm assuming it's just the wrong mixture, but like said, I don't know much about that.
Austy. There are quite a few things that could cause this. Carb plugged internally being one of them. My first question though is what happened just prior to this symptom? Any repairs? Any parts changed? Any other symptoms resolved? Anybody working on this truck?
Try a near complete rebuild. Lol! I did have this issue with the engine before I rebuilt it, but it was resolved with adjustments to the carb. (By someone who knew what they were doing. Not me.)
If you can't fix the problem with a rebuilt carb then you may want to check your compression if you don't have harden exh. valve seats. Popping back out the carb is what happens when their on there way out..orich
Check your timing. Unhook and plug the vacuum line at the distributor, set the timing to about 12*, hook the vacuum line back up and set the idle. FEs seem to like a fairly high initial timing, as long as it isn't pinging or kicking back while cranking the higher the better.
I'm with Ford_six. When tuning my truck,I have the same truck with same engine as you, I had similar symptoms with too large of point gap. Try closing your gap slightly and see if it improves.Always try the simple stuff first!
