Thanks for the kind words. I am leaning towards old fashioned marine spar varnish. Maybe in a satin, like my paint jobs. I'm not much for shine on my vehicles.

Most of the info on my 'jailbar woodie wagon' has been posted on the '47 and older group. I'm gonna call this one a two year project at best.
All bow to the woodwork master! Beautiful work.

Teaching all I can to my sons while they are listening.

In the last 2 years I have captured my sons attention with these trucks. So now I am using it to my advantage to teach them woodworking, metal repair, auto repair.and anything else. Here are some things I built 20 years ago and this year.

Garage doors. Built with sons.

6' sandblast cabinet i built 20 years ago.

Most of the old fashioned marine spar varnish now has much better UV protection. You still may need to revarnish once a year, but varnish is a nice finish that can easily be re-coated as the new coat will always blend into the old - unlike polyurethane.

Thanks Silver I can put a f250 tail gate in it and F1 fenders but not my Coe fenders.

It takes it down to bare metal and does a good job

I appreciate some people might think why did you not just buy replacement bedsides, wood floor kit, etc. But living in the UK and with the parts only available in the US, shipping was not an option. I managed 204lb split over multiple bags in hold luggage before but the bedsides were not going to be possible.

So I set about fabricating a new base frame for the sides to attached to:

Next I fabricated the bedsides out of Sheet steel, got a local steel works to put a 45 degree folder at the top. Welded some tube and box section to give then the right look and strength.

At the point this photo was taken I was having problems with the carb, either the engine died when put in drive or smoked the tires and ground the concrete! Note: that is transmission fluid and not blood!

The finished bedside in primer before welding in the fender bolts

After paint and assembly, but prior to the wood floor

The wood for the floor of the bed, purchased these oak planks off eBay

Next I trimmed the planks down to size and also to use the best bits of the wood.

Trimmed down and test fit, left board had been sanded as well at this stage

The end result

No apologies needed. Ash is strong yet it's light. I prefer a nice piece of locust, but ash is better at steam bending.....

Nice work Richard! Resourceful doesn't quite do justice to what you've been able to accomplish.
