That 454 will run circles around ANY diesel pickup through the late 90's including ANY 7.3L through 03 until you put a lot of money into one.

Are you sure there's nothing wrong with the GM? Be prepared to be disappointed.
I have to say, from real world experience, that you are dead wrong. I just sold a '94 2500 Suburban some months ago for this very reason. I used it 2 times to pull my 10k TT and it SUCKED. Not only did it suck fuel, but getting it over 55 mph was a chore. Getting 5 mpg was the best one could hope for. Pulling the same trailer with my stock '97 PSD did not even compare. It doesn't work near as hard to get it up to speed, keep it there, and get 10+ mpg while doing so. I notice you own 2 diesels and not a gas rig? I have owned all three big diesels and found them to be superior to any gas engine out there. Just the very nature of the physics of a diesel engine will put any bigblock to the test and win. The newer 8.1 is a pulling beast, but the mpg go down the drain as well not to mention longevity of the motor over time. A properly maintained diesel will go 500k while a properly maintained BB might, MIGHT go 300k before needing an overhaul.

Agreed. Same experience here.

I had a 93 IDI that would out pull the 454 hands down. I just made a run from western oklahoma to pecos tx and averaged 5.6 mpg at about 60 mph in the cheby. My TT weighs in about 10.6k so I thing the PSD will fit the bill for what I need. I only move the camper about every 30-45 days anyway.

There was a guy on here a few years ago that had a statement in his signature. "Its not how fast you hit the wall, its how far you take the wall with you". Torque is the answer and diesels have it. I was trying to explain torque to my son in law and ask him if I rolled a basketball across the floor, would he hesitate to stop it with his foot? Then I asked him if I rolled that same basketball across the floor filled with lead, would he hesitate to stick his foot out there to stop it?
