07 4.2 Clutch Slave Cylinder Question

That's a good question "1sax". I haven't looked at it yet so I don't really know. Via text msg my son explained that his truck was hard to shift. Troubleshooting yielded that the clutch reservoir was low. He looked for leaks but not really knowing what to look for the results were inconclusive. Looking at the part (Rock Auto) it appears that the tranny will have to come out to replace the slave. I'm travelling on business this week so can't really help him. Hopefully we sill have some time Sat to chase the problem.

The reason I posted here is my truck has always been a hard shifter, and the stick drags hard coming out of third gear sometimes. But I make my shifts without any grinding. My clutch reservoir is not low, just checked it the other day. The reservoir is small and there's a long tube from it down to the clutch master cylinder, so if you can see fluid in the reservoir after taking out the rubber filler, you do not have a substantial fluid leak, and there has been no chance to get air in the system. Some hydraulic clutches have an adjustment. Usually this is to make sure you have the proper free play or to take up for clutch wear if it starts slipping. What I don't know is if this truck has an adjustment and if the adjustment can be used to affect the stroke of the clutch arm to make a proper release for easier shifting. I imagine I'll be taking mine to the dealer to see what they say. I'm not happy about it. I was glad to get the manual shift truck as I've had a number of manual trucks and cars over the years, and I always look at a manual as a lot less trouble than an auto. I imagine the labor on a job like this (slave clutch replacement) is probably 4 hrs or more. I can imagine a bill for around $400 for this job. Still, if that's all that goes wrong with it, it still beats a $3000 auto trans job. Maybe they'll be able to adjust it.
