Turn signal dilemma

I was originally going to use the parking lights as turn signals, as many do...but recently I have had second thoughts and am seriously leaning towards putting them back on the fenders in the front and running a second set in the rear.

Here is the original configuration

I just like to looks of them there! Anyone else run them this way?

I took the front turnsignals off the top of the fenders when I had my truck painted in 1999. Sometimes I kind of wish they were still there as they were when I bought it from Grandpa. In the rear I have separate brake/tail lights and turnsignals. I think this is important for more visibility to give motorists more warning of my intentions...

PS: what is the latest date on your PA registration tag on your PA license plate? I think I have one like that.

Personally I think if you already have holes in the fender there, use them.

Indybeer (love that handle, especially the second half), since you are here in Indiana, you could just forget the turn signals altogether. I am seriously thinking of not putting signals back on Gertie.

I checked with local and state law enforcement folks, and their understanding of Indiana motor vehicle code is that if the vehicle did not have a particular feature when manufactured, it is not required to be installed now. Examples are: seat belts, air bags, sidemarker lights, etc.

IF, and a big IF, you have aftermarket signals installed, they are required to work. Otherwise, if you don't mind pissing off other drivers, and hanging your arm out the window in freezing weather to signal, you can do so without fear of being stopped and ticketed.

With all the idiots driving around here...going without signal lights is just asking for problems

I'm with Ross. If the holes are in, go with the fender mounted . There is a very homey look to them.

Be aware of how "in the way" those fender lights can be when working on the engine. They certainly are more visible there. I welded up the fender holes on Blue and left the lights on the cowl.

If you want another negative for on the fender, every fender I've seen (even in the desert) that had them, held water under them and rotted a bigger hole out.

I was pretty reluctant to remove the lights from atop my front fenders, as they had been there for as long as we have had the truck, it just seemed weird and incomplete with them gone.

That said, the damn things were always in the way, and I can't count the times I have raked off skin or jammed into them in some manner while doing work. And, to go along with Ross, I discovered when I removed them that the original 3/8" mounting hole has grown to around an inch.

It has been a couple months since I took them off, and now don't miss them at all. I also took off the wad of tail lights too, and just installed repros. To me, the truck now looks cleaner.
