so to echo what the cc article said, I went out to the truck with my measurement mic and my tuning rack (I work in pro audio) and took some measurements

in my garage with my dumpouts open
idle 100db
2500rmp 110db
at 4k 125 db

through a cat, 2 1/2 inch pipe and a super 44
idle 81db
2500rpm 89db
4k 94db

outside dumpouts open
idle 95db
2500 rpm102 db
4k 110db

closed
idle 79db
2500rmp 87db
4k 92db

basically loud enough to cause hearing damage with prolonged exposure.
to give you some comparison
front row at a rock concert averages 110 db
in an enclosed space such as a tunnel or forested or mountain pass where there are a lot of surfaces to reflect off it approaches the level of instant discomfort and is only 30 db away from instant perforation of the ear drum. I would highly recommend some sort of muffler even a glass pack in place of the cat and a turn out right after the cab corner would be better then straight pipe
