Figure out what your total investment will be, then decide if its worth it to you.

For me, I decided that my 66 F100 wasn't the truck I wanted to have for the long haul, so my cutoff is 6k. Im at about $4700 right now.
Likewise, this isn't the truck I want for the long haul. BUT, it seems to be in good enough condition that a little work and a little money will have me in a pickup I can use (I need a truck before winter) and hopefully sell for a slight profit down the road.

trans gear or rear gears? If you're talking about trans gears, if you're planning to go with the tilt column, you could swap in a 5sp trans and solve the column shift problem.....

Tilt/PS, disc brakes and a 5 speed would all be first things to do.

You know about bolt on discs & power steering from '73-79 F100/F150's right?

I know about the PS but there's bolt on discs? Or do you mean bold on tie rods, bars and brake assemblies?

There are a few threads running now about disc brake swaps. Basically, you can pull the whole front end out from under a 73-79 and bolt it under the '66. Search those other threads for more details

Edit: Short bed. No serious rust.
Hi, $1700 depending on how much work you have to put into it is Not Bad but $1500 is better because when you get the truck in your hands then you really start to see what it really needs and that $1700 turns into a $3000 truck to make it worthy. My 1958 Ford F250 was in rough shape when I got it and I paid $1500 for it and have spent $7000 so far to get it where it's road worthy and safe so it adds up. But the way it sounds from you it is in not that bad of shape, I can tell you one thing definitely don't pass it up, when I go to all these truck get together s on Friday nights with my 58 and my family, their are a few 66's and are very DESIRABLE among the truck guys especially if they are in good shape. Food for thought!!! OK GOOD LUCK!! Hope it works out.

1500 was my original offer to his 3k asking. He wouldn't budge, came back at me after a few weeks with 2k. I met in the middle at 1700.

I wish I knew better the desirability of the 66 styleside. Like I've said, I see them for sale all the time but never sold.

OK well in that case then I think $1700 is fair not too bad, the 66 is desirable among the truck guys and quite frankly they look really nice when all fixed up even when they are not a shiny penny they look good. Listen MILDLY restored I have seen them sell for $7500 to $8500 depending on how much you have done. Now fully restored I have seen them go up to $12,000 on a good day so not to bad. I think if you try to do most of the stuff yourself and only leave the big things to a professionals you should be OK. Also Little by Little don't BREAK the Bank right away just get it going and when it is a work in Progress is when peaple Love to see them so it's all good. Hope it Helps!!!!

Impossible to break the bank because it will be empty. I'll have enough to get it running and do the body work myself.

I'll have to learn how to paint myself, too.

LOL!!!! WELL I can definitely understand that !!!!!! that is the life of a working man but in reality we are really RICH especially if you have a family. My Wife and Children make it all worth it even with my 58 because sometimes we work on it together and then we all hop in and RIDE!!! to the TOWER SHOPS SHOW down here in Florida every Friday night and it is totally worth it to work on it as much as you can. It doesn't have to be a shiny penny as long as you have it and it can be worked on. LOOK UP MY ALBUM it's called a "WORK IN PROGRESS" I think you will enjoy the before and after picture's, maybe it will motivate you LOL!!!

Looking up now. It would never be a new penny because it will be my work truck.

But ideally I could get it nice, sell it, and buy a 50's Ford to work on.

OK, Even as a work truck it will be cool to ride around in it while you are working... and you fix it up at your Pace, and yes if you fix it up enough people will actually stop you and ask you if you want to sell it sometimes and you never know you might make a surprising profit. As far as painting it YES you can definitely learn that and do that yourself even all the body work!!! GOOD LUCK!
