SWAPPING 7.3 IDI FOR 7.3 POWERSTROKE

I'm buying a 1995 F450 with a 7.3 powerstroke and want to swap the engine to my 1994 F350 International IDI. I'm familiar with the changes necessary for things such as radiator, air cleaner box etc., but is there any serious problems that are going to make this swap a nightmare? Any heads up would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Main thing is use the wiring from headlights to taillights.

Should be no real serious problems swapping.

Welcome to fte!

Like he said. Use EVERY inch of the donor truck harness.

No need to swap radiator, they are the same

Don't forget about transmissions. There are enough differences between the IDI trans and PSD trans (internal, not external; they'll still bolt up fine) that you can't just drop the engine in and go. Unless you plan on using the PSD trans in the same swap, then your issues got a lot easier.

The IDI and PSD auto transmissions have different torque converters and solenoid packs. The manual transmissions have different flywheel/clutch assemblies.

Like the others said, every inch of the wiring is going to have to be swapped. That includes the dash wiring, and for that it is much easier to just swap the whole dash, provided the interior is the same color.

You sure about that? I'm not generally one to question your knowledge on these things, but I thought all the IDI trucks got smaller radiators. Maybe '94 was an odd year or something?

SWAPPING 7.3 IDI FOR 7.3 POWERSTROKE

I appreciate the heads up on the wiring harness guys. As for the tranny what I am intending to do is to put the powerstroke from the 95 F350 into my 94 with its AEo4D that only has about 15k miles on it since rebuild. .I am not familiar with the PSD issues, but I'm just going to keep the 95 F450 and its tranny for parts should I need any. Will I have any problems with my 94 AEo4D and the 95 Powerstroke? Also, is there a junction in the harness separating the exterior harness and the interior (dash, doors, etc.) harness? In other words do I swap only the exterior harness or the whole shebang?

This. ^^^ Every bit of the harness, inside and out.

If you use the IDI transmission, you'll have to use the torque converter off the PSD, and switch out solenoid packs on the inside. Drop the pan on both and just swap the electronics.

100% positive. The 94 and early 95 used the all copper "IDI" radiator

Hmmm. I knew that at last the '94 PSD had a different cooling system (with an overflow tank instead of a degas bottle) but I didn't know it was the same as the IDI. I guess I learn something new every day. Thanks Brad.
