ts chip review

Well I bit the bullet and decided to buy a chip. I've always had good luck with my "home grown" mods with good dyno numbers to back them up but I figured- new truck, new methods. After careful consideration of chips I decided jot to go with tw or dp chips soley due to my engi e and supporting equipment being bone stock. I saw no need to pay the extra money for the custom chip when I have nothing to really customize to. That being said, I got a ts performance chip, 6 positions, for $298 shipped to my door. Positions are stock, hi idle, 50, 75, 100, 140.
Now before you guys start chiming in about how 100 &140 are useless, its not my first rodeo.....lol.
So here's my test rig: 97 f350, 181k. Intake, 3 in downpipe to 4" to 5" stacks. Fpr is shimmed, all other "c00n" mods are removed....lol. auto trans with my drilled accumulator. 4.10's turning 37's.
I must say, I'm impressed overall with the canned tunes. Even stock feels better as I was running naw6 before and the ts is flashed to tde1. Mpg went from 15 to 19 in 100hp mode and I got 15 towing to the beach this past weekend in 75hp mode. The 75 mode feels equivalent to the 1705 superchip I ran in my old truck.
Egts while towing 7k were managable with only having to drop out of overdrive once as I reached 1000 and decided to drop to 3rd pulling a big hill. I was turning 1500 rpm at time of downshift. power was great. Effortless takeoffs. Holds speed with no issues. Minimal smoke when lugging up hills. Extremely light haze under low rpm load.
I briefly towed in 100hp for test purposes. Low end power was better, more smoke though which I didn't want all over my car so I didn't run here long. Egts were fine until lugging at 1500 up hills. Climbed a little faster then in 75 hp mode.
Playing around while empty is fun. Higher rpm speeds there isn't much of any difference between 100 & 140. There is a noticable difference in takeoff and midrange though. Smoke output is greater as well. 75-100 can be felt thriughout the entire powerband. On stock I jectors I seem to be happiest running in 100hp mode and flicking to 140 to blow some extra smoke.
So in my opinion, for a truck running stock injectors, you can't beat a ts chip. There are sales and deals out there to get them cheap. Plus, if I upgrade injectors and hpop, I can send the chip out to tony for a reburn. Best of both worlds. I will try to get some videos in the daylight as its been too busy this past week.

I could easily see why the canned tunes would work for a mostly stock truck. I guess I drank the forum koolaid and went with custom tunes before I had any real mods. I was diligent in my search for a chip though. Found an eBay special for canned TS chip for 215 and BTS tuned it for 100, so I'm not far from what you paid. It's amazing how much of pigs these trucks are in stock form. Love to see some video!

I bought a AFE intake hoping to quite down the turbo whine and at Throughbred diesel for an extra $75 I got a TS chip with canned tunes on it. I figured WTF, for $75 I now have an extra chip to use my chip burner on to play around with. Jake sent me some tunes and Jonathan sent me some tunes. I'm thinking of making a chip with several of the best tunes.

Alex has the same ts canned tunes chip.at rre he had it dynoed to know before numbers before major mods.it had actually. made enough additional power to negate driveline hp loss. cant get too mad about that. i have an old gold hypertech single tune 50hp chip in minee.it makes NO haze at all from what i can see.

Well now Alex's stock chip is in my truck. Just got it from him this last weekend. He is going to get the one he won burned with some tunes. I was going to take that one but I put it in my truck and we found out it was blank.

Do you notice anything funky with the transmission shifts under hard acceleration? Mine does somthing kinda wierd and it didn't start doing it untill I put the chip in. Its only under hard throttle in the 2-3 shift. Its not a slip, and not sure I would even call it a flare but its like the converter is locked (which I know it can do in second) then it unlocks, then locks back up all within a matter of a second or two. I'm not too worried about it since it only did after the chip was installed. Maybe I'll post a video of what it does cause I'm not sure this explanation makes much sense.

Glenn - My truck dyno'd 220hp and 330 ftlb. That was with an exhaust manifold leak. He pointed out how you could see it smoking out of the drivers side manifold... and he could only build like 12lbs of boost.
I have had it higher than that before.

And yeah my truck is chipless currently. I won a TS 6 position chip and a free set of tunes from John at No limit... well the chip is apparently blank until I get those tunes. lol I figured it would have the canned tunes as well.

Thats not bad price Joe! I see all over the ts 6 positions are typically going for 250 shipped.. and thats blank!

Thanks for the writeup Joe. I have been considering a stock TS chip for my truck since I have stock injectors and don't have to worry about some of the funky transmissions that some have mentioned with the stock tunes (my truck is a 5 speed). I figure bang for the buck it might be worth the investment for now. It's on my list of things to watch for but there are, as always, more pressing things on the budget for now.

niceeeee! Yeah when I was full into it, unloaded, I could make around 18.
I was surprised at how much it smoked when she was on the dyno!

Speaking of which I need to get that video/pics from Josh.

I'm still amazed that you can't run your own truck on the dyno!! I don't like that idea at all but I guess he knows what he is doing and I don't??? Anybody know who is running it next year, if anybody??

I'm with you Glenn. If I couldn't run my own truck on the dyno, I'd pass.

Glad the chip's working good for ya Joe.

Joe what your egt's like ?
I had TS tunes and my egt's were high, ICP was limit to around 2400 and ipr DC% was limit to 47% and my go pedal was real touchy in the 100 & 140
