99 f-250 v-10 tranny problems
Has anyone else (besides me) had any problems with thier transmission in thier 99 f-250 super duty with the V-10?
I paid $3000 last July for a new (reman) tranny while on vacation in Calif. and today I dropped it off at the dealership in my home town for the same problem with only 10,000 miles on the tranny.
The problem last year was a so called bad planetary gear. The tranny made a grinding noise in first, second, and reverse and would slam into gear. The problem this year is exactly the same!!! I haven't heard back from the dealer yet today.
If anyone has had similar problems please let me know.
Thanks

Welcome to FTE
There are thousands of threads here and on the diesel site about the 4R100 trans and it's strengths weaknesses.
Highly likely one of three things happened to yours.
1. poor quality control caused you to get a BAD trans from the get go.
2. the R&R of the first trans did NOT include flushing the cooler and installing a Magnafilter as per Ford TSB.... that allowed the crap metal particals in the cooler to later destroy the second trans.
3. these tranys CAN generate a LOT of heat very fast if you are hauling/towing a heavy load and the Torque Converter starts the Lock/Unlock dance. If you super heat the Mercon to over 230F it will oxidize fast, and loose much of it's lubricity and things get bad real quick, unless you change the worthless fluid.
Sorry to hear of your expensive experiance... BTW there are now several good shops that can "bullit Proof" the 4R100 and if your driving habits are what is killing it, then I suggest you think about upgrading to a real good rebuild rather than the Ford stock unit.
If you don't have yet, I reccommend a aux cooler with fan and a real temp guage for the 4R100 and keep the temp under 220F with changing gears and slowing down.
