is my engine governed?
I have a 95 TPI 460 engine with OBD1 in my 72 Ranchero with an AOD trans. I didn't build it I bought it that way. When I get to 80mph it cuts out like the ignition just turned off. Same if I pull out to pass another vehicle right at 80 it cuts out, turns back on at 78 but cuts again if I go up to 80. The motor is only turning less than 3K rpm when it does this. I can accelerate through the lower gears over 3K rpm. Is my engine governed? Maybe it came from a fleet vehicle.?
The sticker on the ECU reads: CC 00130634 2TR. Does this indicate anything?
The check engine light doesn't come on when it does this. I've checked fuel pressure at the fuel rail & it's fine. Any ideas?

Sounds like a governor though 80mph seems low but it's possible, the computer is programmed for the speed limit but it's not flashable so you would have to replace it with another version that doesn't have a speed limiter.
By the way you do not have an AOD in there it's going to be the computer controlled E4OD and it is controlled by the engine computer.

It really isn't a governor, it is the computer shuts fuel off at a set speed. I have never seen where mine cuts off but have never traveled over 80 mph. Now back in 95 a friend bought a new 95 F150 4x4 5.8, E4OD it shut off at right around 90 mph.
So I agree 80 sounds low but when you start conversions & you don't do it you never know where or what was used.

Pretty certain the trans is an AOD, not an EAOD. I researched it pretty thoroughly. And there's only one electrical plug going to the tailshaft, speed sensor I guess. Doesn't have a lockup converter. It also seems to like to pull away in 2nd under gentle throttle. I have to shift the lever to L to get 1st. Remember I didn't build this car. It was built by a car restoration shop in CA as their tow vehicle in the late 90's.

I am willing to bet that the tires on this guys car are smaller than those that came on the original donor truck, which will change the overall gear ratio. This in turn could make the computer think the vehicle is traveling at 90 mph, and thus shutting it down.

I jacked her up & crawled under it & it's definitely the AOD [bottom left in your dig.]
The engine is 460 it says 7.2 cast in the intake.
The speedo is about 3mph fast I've checked it against a police radar trailer at the side of the road.
Wheel rims are 15in dia. but low profile tires 205/85/15.

Just took a closer look & yes there's an adapter plate which I never noticed before until now. The AOD seems to handle the engine just fine, though kickdown is sluggish [maybe a trans kit will fix that?] Last year I had a non shifting issue with it once we got really cold overnight temps until it warmed up then it was fine, I took off the tail shaft housing & governor & cleaned up the governor valve, changed the oil & filter, not a drop of sludge or debris in the pan [which I was dreading!] so far so good. See if this winter temps bring back the non shifting issue. I was thinking of disconnecting the speed sensor plug at the speedo drive & see if that stopped the cutting out at 80.
