What's up with the crappy brake pads?

45,000 miles.

I have an annoying low speed rattle that sounds like a pebble in the hub cap.
Took the wheel off yesterday and can hear whatever it is hitting the inner dust shield as it rolls around.

Pulled the caliper off looking to see if I can get to it. And this is what my pads look like.

For the past several months I have felt as if the braking was reduced, requiring more pedal effort. I guess a quarter or more of pad missing will do that.

Do all Ford brake pads look like this at 2-3 years old?

I have always been a proponent of using OEM pads and rotors, but this has me wondering.

Looks like it's been soaking in salt water for a couple of years.

Post a photo of the rotor, please

I just had my tires rotated when the changed my oil and I looked at my brakes while it was on the lift. I'm at 60k miles and I "think" I might have 10k to on the rears and at least 20k on the front. They granted, I didn't pull them, but I was looking at them with a light in my hand. They don't resemble those rusted out pads at all.

Looks like somebody lives where they use magnesium chloride heavily in the winter! I've never seen pads look like that before. Most people actually comment on how long the OEM brakes last on these trucks.

I just had mine replaced at 150k and they still had some life in them. Must be something going on that is not right.

Odd that you heard a rattle in the hubcap, but never heard the wear-bar noise maker, or maybe they don't have them on our trucks.

I have 95,000 on my original pads, about 1/3 of that towing, but I'm pretty easy on brakes, mostly highway use and I let the engine do as much of the braking as possible.

Maybe - I live in Jersey, but I have lived here all my life and never had pads that look like this in any of my vehicles.

Pic below is from last February.

The rattle is in the hub somewhere. But there is a shield on the inside that prevents seeing anything.

As to the wear noise maker, I had to pry, tap in pry, tap in etc etc the inner pad just to get it out. There is plenty of thickness left on the pads, just not the full swept area.

So the noise makers were not even close to the rotor.

I've lived in the south my entire adult life but still, I can't imagine ANY brake part ever looking like that no matter how it is treated or whatever it is subjected to.

Is that corrosion from some kind of chemical?
Corrosion from some combination of metals that don't like each other?

I just can't imagine that is possible unless muriatic acid was sprayed on it (HCL).

They use it here in Michigan, but I've never experienced anything like that!

Road Salt!!!! I've already had to pull my front brakes apart because the pads rusted themselves to the caliper holder and were sticking, and i drive the truck everyday.

They use chemicals all over Wisconsin on roads. I've never had that issue here. Chemicals up here are harsher than road salt by far on steel.
