solid axle dana 50 in obs f250

I have always been in the market for a 92-97 f250/f350. I currently have a couple 67-72 highboys...love them, my absolute favorite truck. I also have a 78 im puting a cummins in...But I have always wanted a 90s ford and when it comes to the ones in my area it seems you can get a nice f250 for cheap, and everyone that has an f350 keeps it or wants way to much for it...I dont have a huge problem with the ttb, I just like a solid axle better. I have considered a dana 50 swap idea as I can get 99-04 dana 50s for like $250 at a local salvage yard. But I dont want to run super duty lug pattern or unit bearings...is it possible to take outer knuckle, hubs, spindle and stub shaft from a dana 50 ttb and put it together with the inner knuckle and inner shaft of a dana 50 solid axle? Thought just keeps crossing my mind...but I dont know if the u joins are the same, or the ball joints are the same.

Thanks

As far as I know you can swap knuckels on a SD d60 to OBS knuckles but I dont know if you can on a D50.

The problem is, where to you find OBS knuckles

Thanks...I did some parts research and it appears the SD dana 50 ball joints and outer u joints are different then a dana 50 ttb...They were different part numbers atleast, so who knows, they may work.

seems like a lot of work to just run a d50. might consider the other easy options...

I don't know what your local junkyards are like, but 8 lug 44's are pretty abundant around here. yea, its not a 50, but if youre not running tires larger than 33's there wouldn't be much to worry about.

also, im able to pick a 60 from time to time. might just want to keep an eye out for the big guy and save all other hassle.

Its probably more hassle then it would be worth...but I am kind of into doing things a little different...even though an 8 lug 44 would do just the same as a dana 50...it would have those tiny little 44 hubs sticking out, bleh...lol. I am just more curious about doing it then anything. Id probably be plenty happy with a ttb for what id use it for.

Isn't a solid dana 50 a dana 44 center section with dana 60 outers? I believe they are and the axle shafts are "necked up" just after the spline area to accommodate the dana 60 tubes and knuckles.

It won't work. The D50 TTB knuckle is a unique POS. You can swap a 92-97 D60 ball joint knuckle with a 99-04 D50 or D60 knuckle but you will also need the stub shaft. You could redrill the hub but I am not sure where you would find a 8x6.5 rotor to fit it and you would be stuck with the unit bearings unless you drop some cash on a conversion kit.

The solid D50 uses 30 spline inner shafts and the gears are slightly larger than a D44. The stub shaft and knuckle are the same as the D60.
