Hey Fellas, I just got the news from my machine shop that my axles are no good because the guy who removed the bearings on my 9 inch gouged them with a torch.He's telling me a new pair of axles is 450.00. Now the reason they were at the machine shop at all was to be re drilled for 5 on 4 1/2 so they will match the new mus11 front bolt pattern.The re drill cost is 160.00. So I said hold off thinking I would go to the auto wrecking yard here and find new axles or even a new ford 9 inch.When I explained to the guy at the auto wrecking yard who by the way is a friend and seasoned rodder he told me to scrap the whole idea of the 9 inch and re-drill unless I was adament about this being a race truck which it is not and go with another used rear for 150.00 which will give me the correct bolt pattern as well and or possible rear discs.I already have time and money in to my 9inch as in all brand new brake hardware,new drums(totalling around 170.00) and detailing and its installed. The auto wrecking friend says that even if I get the 9 inch re drilled I am going to be very limited with rim selection due to the center on 9 inch axles that ford uses to center the wheel.Its that piece in the center that is raised about 1/2 inch maybe less.What I want is a rear that I can put some real hearty meats on but keep in mind this wont be used for racing just cruising and am trying to lessen my loss on the money i'm in the 9 inch Ihave now???Help Help Thanks DJ

A. Moser Engineering can cut, respline, and do anything you want. VERY reasonable.
B. Check with Fat Fenderered Ford, we went thru a long exercise here last year about adapting 4.5" pattern car axles to a truck rear. 77-9 T Bird/Cougar iffn I remember. Plug & Play.
I did most of the Hollanders research but didnt save the thread.

Mosers shortened my 9" axles resplined and redrilled for 4.5 all for less than a hundred bucks I think... less the shipping... they do top notch work very reasonably...
I'd stay with the 9" if possible, more gear choices, replacement parts will be available forever, and there are many more people knowledgable on that pumpkin... and they are plentiful. ford used them for about 50- years..

if you use the 57-72 F100 rearend, it is almost a
bolt-in. I just found out that if you use the driver's
side axle, backing plate, and drum from a 72-79
Torino, Ranchero,LTD II,or 77-79 T-bird or Cougar,
they will swap into the truck housing. That will give
you the car (4 1/2") bolt pattern

why don't you just go to the salvage yard and get a 9" with a 4.5 bolt pattern. Around a 1977 versallis or granada will have what you need, just buy some new spring perches, set the angle, center it, and weld it in. Most yards I've been to are asking 150.00 and 200.00 w/disc brakes. They will even pull the rear end after you pick the one you want.
