You've got quite a bit of mis-information here, and I'm not sure where you got it. You've lumped in too many engines into one can kettle of soup. A 260 engine uses a 5 bolt bellhousing, along with pre-65 289's. It's not the same as the 65 and newer 289, 302, 351C/W, which use a 6 bolt bellhousing in the "small block pattern." 351M/400/429/460 all use the same later style big block bell pattern. They are not to be confused with FE's, which have their own unique pattern.

I'm not blaming you, because you've been hoodwinked along with many others that have read this BS info.

People that claim 5 bolt bell housings are pre 1965 are either unaware, dense or have forgotten about early 1965 Mustangs.

Mustang first shown to the general public 4/17/1964 at the NY World's Fair, went on sale nationwide 4/23/1964. FoMoCo called 'em '65's from the get go.

1965 Mustang 260/289/289 HiPo assembled before 8/20/1964 have the 5 bolt bell housing pattern.

1965/72 Ford Passenger Car Parts Catalog ~ F = parts catalog symbol for Mustang.

C3OZ-6392-E .. Flywheel (bell) Housing- 5 engine mounting holes / Marked C3AA-6394-C

Wayne, sorry for painting with a broad brush, I know better. That's what I get for trying to squeeze in help between other things but it looks like your pre 65 statement is also incorrect according to Bill. No issues.

Just because Ford introduced a new model a few months early doesn't change the fact that 5 bolt bell small block engines were discontinued prior to 1965. I stand by my statement. With all due respect, Bill, you're really reaching to try to discredit me for some reason, and your motivation escapes me.

I don't think anybody is trying to "discredit" you. I made a mistake and was screwing with you, hence the tongue out face. If we are going to be technical, which I don't think we really need to be on this subject as it does to apply to the original question, we both had errors.

Read the first line of post 17 again.

I DID NOT try and discredit you, quite the contrary. I said I'm not blaming you, because you've been hoodwinkled like a lot of other people.

The fact is 1965 Mustang introduced 4/23/64 and before 8/20/64 came with 5 bolt pattern V8 bell housing.

The hood, steering wheel, horn ring, turn signal switch, the V8 timing cover and the waterpump are also different before 8/20/64.

Hey all ,, sorry its been while but I do have some more info... I have an 87 block. I did pull all of my block numbers so I know what im working with now. I did end up picking up the c4 tranny. it has a flexplate with it now. haven't really looked at it too much yet, haven't had too much time to mess around with the truck..

but since it is a 87 engine ,,, I do need a 50 oz flywheel ,,correct? should I get a 157 tooth?

thanks again guys ...
