4x4 will not engage

Hey guys I am new here and looked around for a good Ford truck site. Looks like this one is the best so far. I have a 92 Ford Explorer 4.0 4x4 . On the dash is the low and 4x4 buttons .... when I hit either the 4x4 will not engage. It used to work a few months ago and I haven't needed it till the other day and now .... nothing Anyone have any idea what it could be ?

The lights arent lighting up or its lighting up but not working?

First off basic check the fuses. then going off memory of my old Ranger, there is a plug on the side of the Tcase make sure it is connected and that they aren't corroded because it will not work if it is.

welcome to FTE.
what Larry said.
if the fuses are good and the plug is not cheesy, get a test light and check for power at the plug. there are a few things that can go wrong, with a few being bad fuse, bad connections, bad relay, and bad shift motor.

I will check them tomorrow. The lights do not come on at all, well I say that but the 4x4 one is VERY dim. I will check the plug too. One of my friends said it may be a bad solenoid. Is this possible? Thanks for the help guys!

I did not get a chance to check out the plug, but the fuses were good. Maybe tomorrow I will have time!

Hi, I'm having something of a simular problem. Sorry if there is a seperate thread I don't Have all day to look through 100's of posts . I have a 2005 ford explorer xlt . When I engage the 4x4 high or low it automatically starts jerking in the frontal part of the truck within driving the first 10 feet. I take it to 4 auto and it stops. Seems its trying to engage but doesn't make it like the front is locked or something. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

This happens randomly one day when I was leaving work it just started automatically going into 4 high I did have a low tire and loose hub bolt but those have been fixed . This problem is still current other than it hasn't tried to go high4 by itself. Just more info to think on

try unplugging the t-case shift motor. this will tell you if it is electrical or not if the problem stops

I think unplugging it didn't change anything unless its just supposed to always work like 4x auto
