Wax & Grease remover
Hey Guys,
I have a question for any chemmies out there. Let me preface my question however by stating that I am asking solely to satisfy my inquisitions NOT to substitute one product for another...
What is wax and grease remover? The kind you would use to prep a paint job. I did google the answer and a lot of what I came up with was a mix between mineral spirits, not mineral spirits but a refined concoction of... and so on an so forth.
I am merely just curious as I needed to remove some wax. I just went and got some but it kind of smells a little like naptha...

I don't know if this will help or not - but for cleaning a surface before painting, I use Dupont Prep-Sol. It contains Acetone.
I also have a product called "After Wash" which does the same thing and it contains Acetone, methanol, and Xylene.
These are considered "cleaners and wax-removers", not a "degreaser".
I don't know what is in a degreaser". Maybe just a weaker concentration.
Mineral Sprits will leave a residue. Don't use it as the final step before painting.

Yes, usually Naphtha with a mix of solvents from other families.
Alcohols, Ketones, and aromatic hydrocarbons like Xylene or Toulene.
This way it covers all the bases and will lift most waxes and oils.
You need to wipe it off while still wet or the contaminants will just settle back as the prep evaporates.
Silicone is the worst!
Sometimes I go back and forth with solvent and a detergent like Dawn dishwashing liquid + TSP rinse to try and get rid of that crap.
