Got a line on a V8

I have a 49 F1 with 226 3 spd.

I had my 66 Mustang at a show today and a guy had a 40 Ford pickup with a V8 flattie. He said he had a builder V8 out of a 40 he would sell me for $300.
It has been in a warehouse for 15 years and was running when parked, so to speak.

I am going to look at it this week and need to know what to look for, and would this motor work in my F1?

If original to the '40, there is quite a bit of difference in what is stock for a '49. They're flatheads but different series. That engine could be installed in the '49 with some work.

Almost no work to install. But I'd be real leery of it. Those 59-series engines had the distributor on the front of the block, and are a super pain to work on. The upper half of the bellhousing is part of the block, the oil pan was the lower half. Those would also be 85 HP engines vs. the throbbing 100 - 105 HP of the 8BA's ('48-on).
