1965 F250 Vin

.

Here is the vin number for the truck I am intrested in, what can you tell me about the engine, I think its a 240, but I am unsure. It has only 81,000 original miles, body is in decent shape, would you pay $4000 for it???

F25 = F250 2WD

J = 240 1V I-6. 240 originally, but what engine is in there now? 240/300 look identical, share the same bore, the stroke is different. 240: 3.18" - 300: 3.98" / Measure the stroke to determine engine size.

P = Twin Cities MN Assembly Plant.

588281 = 1965, assembled September 1964.

Do not believe the miles shown on the odometer, as it reads to 99999.9 then returns to ZERO!

Do not believe a single word a seller claims! Private sellers lie just as well as used/new car dealers, lawyers, politicians and TV evangelists.

The truck hailed from the rust belt originally, so while it looks nice on the outside, could have major rust issues hidden from view.

Examine the radiator support where it bolts to the frame rails, rear sections of front fenders, use a magnet to determine if bondo is present under that shiny paint.

Look at the drip rails where they meet the roof, rocker panels below the doors, floor pan, cab corners, bed floor pan and cross members.

Do not buy it until you inspect it. If you cannot, hire an inspector, listed in the Services Offered section of Hemmings Motor News.

Dunno where the truck is now, but if it's located in the 'lower 48' .. consider what the costs will be to have it delivered to Seattle, then shipped by barge to the 'frozen north.'

Arctice y block - I am in kodiak

NumberDummy- thanks for the info, I contacted a mechanic this morning and he is going to give the truck a inspection, and let me know what the issuse are. I do not plan on buying before it before i get to inspect it myself. I do want to have the mechanic give me a report on the condition of it. Thank you for the information, the classic car dealership said they have the recoreds for the truck and it only had two owners.

Where were the two owners residing, in the rust belt?

'Tricky' (arctic) lives on PoW Island. I've been to AK 5 times since 2004, but not to Kodiak...just the usual cruise ship ports (Ketchikan-Sitka-Juneau-Skagway-Seward) and Tok-Fairbanks-Denali-Anchorage.

2005: Holland-America M/V Statendam began listing after the ship left Sitka, starboard propeller shaft packing was the cause. I was told this by a member of the crew, and that this had occurred twice before. Ship remained stopped for several hours, then went hell bent to Juneau, slowly returning to an even keel.

When the ship docked, I went straight to the USCG station, reported what had occurred. They had not been informed (as I assumed), which is a violation of US Maritime law.

Officer in charge said: "This will not happen on my watch!"

Photo of the door data plate? Since it has the small six, bear in mind it probably has the standard ratio rear axle 4.56. This is considered an around town workhorse ratio, not freeway friendly, especiallly with small diameter tires. It appears to be a clean original paint truck, so the major concern would be underbody rust if it was driven in salt country. Engine appears to be a replacement '67 model, original engine ( should be painted all black) may have had a warranty issue or someone ran it low on oil? Automatic choke?

Left: Pic of truck ID engine tag / Right: Pic of Passenger Car 100 engine ID tag code.

240 1V 1-6 / 1967 / 7 = Change level / 7-D = April (D) 1967 / 100-A = Galaxie/LTD

100 not listed in 1964/72 truck parts catalog, found it in the 1965/72 Ford car parts catalog (pic at right).

Warranty Plate (engine) code is the 5th digit of 1960/79 Passenger Car 11 digit VIN. V only applies to Galaxie/LTD, as the 240 was standard equipment 1965/71.

1957/80: 4th digit of Truck/Bronco/Econoline 11 digit VIN is the engine code (See VIN decode in post 3). J = 240 I-6 (1965 only); A = 240 I-6 (1966/74). 240 cancelled at the end of the 1974 model run.

1963/79 Trucks: Warranty Plate (door data tag) located (riveted) on the left door face below the latch, or (1948/79) riveted on the inside of the glovebox door.
