oh, and those newer d60's are pure beef. yeah, the metric pattern sucks, and the need for 18''+ rims or whatever is ghey, but everything besides balljoints is burly stuff. get the balljoints dave mentioned and that'd be about it......also there really isn't much out there for these axles besides balljoints because people aren't having breakage or issues with much if anything, especially in "regular" truck truck applications.

King pin will not bolt right in. It can be made to fit of course.
That's a hard answer question. Too many variables

I'd say you could do anything you want with 40s and smaller. 40-44" would be pushing it but likely to live a long time.. 44+ is asking for trouble no matter what you do or how much money you sink in it. Unfortunately that's my basic reply to anyone asking about tire size and a d60. IMO they aren't infinitely better in all categories from 78-13. Each axle has bits and pieces that make each one excell in certain areas but none are perfect in stock form.
I could break 5 ton rockwells with 33" t-birds or make 44" boggers live on a d44. It all depends on what you're doing, engine horsepower, gearing, trans type, vehicle weight and level of acceptable stupidity.
But Dave said all that already.

I broke your driveshaft in multiple places simultaneously in a loose dirt field where it had only previously broken on blacktop.
I would like to see it happen also but I am confident in my ability to EFF chit up while on a booze bender.
I win at everything but losing. I also moisten panties unless, of course, they aren't wearing any.

The 60 is plenty strong for 38's. Just remember if you have never had big tires that you will wear components out faster than smaller tires as the bigger tires have a lot more leverage going against all parts.
The axle itself is plenty strong enough to handle the 38's.
