The E4OD transmission is 100% electronic controlled, check for codes by running the Key On Engine Off (KEOE) tests and Continuous Memory (CM) display.

Sounds like it is going into limp mode. Maybe a bad plug/wiring on the passenger side plug at the transmission.

Is your speedometer working correctly? If so, I think your MLPS (manual lever position sensor) on the side of the transmission may need adjustment, or your shifter indicator is no longer reading correctly and it's actually in "2" instead of "D".

speedo works and its in drive but i have been having problems (holding shift lever up to start it and holding it just right for reverse lights to come on when in reverse) before when it was just starting to do it i could push the overdrive off and it would shift but now its where it is now

I suspect your transmission might actually be in "2nd". When driving, try pushing the shifter more towards neutral, and seeing if it actually shifts.

My 0.02 USD worth . . .

Pull the codes and post them up here.

My truck was doing a similar thing, turned out to be a bad 2nd gear solenoid. I changed the solenoid pack because that's what the codes pointed to, it's fine now.

HTH,

Ray

My 1997 7.3 will not shift out of 1st. I have to manually shift it and then back. Not sure what is going on. Suggestions?

First, pull the codes.
Second, make sure the speedometer is working.

If it all checks out good, it's possible the intermediate clutch in the transmission is burnt out. When you apply manual second, the intermediate band also applies, which could mask a burnt out intermediate clutch.
