Glow Plugs for '83 Perkins/Mazda Ranger
Hey all,
Im having an issue, the sooner it's resolved the sooner i can finally hit the road back home to Alaska. I have a 97 Ranger with the diesel engine out of an 83 Ranger (designed by Perkins, built by Mazda). The guy who converted it decided to run a manual glow plug switch to the dash. I wish he hadn't but that's neither here nor there.
The problem is this, the glow plugs are burnt and I can't find anyone who can tell me what to replace them with.
The burnt glow plugs are Hitachi PZ-30 12v (no parts store can track that number and apparently "Hitachi doesnt make glow plugs")
I believe a phone call to Perkins (who designed the engine) resulted in the Motorcraft code ZD2. (Not sure of the voltage on that one) But no one can tell me if that part is even available anymore.
The local Perkins marine shop wasn't any help either...
One helpful guy at a local shop was trying to compare plugs by thread and size... no luck...
Is there anyone out there who has one of these engines? Anyone know what glow plug will work for me?
Thanks for any suggestions. I appreciate it.
On a side note, anyone know how to revert this back to an automatic timed system or if it is even possible?

thanks a lot. woke up this morning and had a couple of disappointing follow-up phone calls to a parts place and a ford/mazda dealer, each ended in recommending that i call the other place... typical.
I did order the plugs from above... hopefully they are what i need.
Again, thanks much!

The thing with glow plugs is that there are ones that will cross over but it's on you to figure it out.
I had a Komatsu track hoe that needed a set and I wasn't about to pay a MILLION dollars for the rip-off dealer ones.
I wound up calling NGK directly, and we figured out which ones would work. The ones I chose wound up being a better plug then the originals. More appropriate for the application and worked (and still work for the guy who owns the machine now) better then the Komatsu ones ever did, at a tenth the price!
There are a bunch of different dimensions, resistances, resistance curves, coil types...etc. etc. But, once you do the homework, it's easy enough to find replacements.
Sounds like you go what you need though.

Those ones I posted are only for the Ranger and B2200, there are probably some JDM vehicles they fit as well, but if others worked I'm sure companies would be happy to grab that market.
Luckily GPs aren't replaced all that often, and can be limped along even when fully non-functional. My 7.3 had two working GPs, but would start ok as long as it was plugged in for a couple hours.
