9" axel length

hey guys i have a 95 f150 4x4 iv been moding with a SAS and a ZF trany
so next is a 9" axel ... so iv got a free 1 from a frend and it came out a a 60s f100 and im not sure if the axel is the same legnth as the 8.8 that is in my truck now so the thing i need to know is what would the legnth of the 8.8 or whats the way i can find out its length with out removeing the 8.8 cuzz iv got to drive it every day

Tape measure? Measure from the back side of the drums on both axles. pretty sure the drum depths will be similar. also id bet money that the 60's axle is a little skinnier. especially if its from a 2wd. i pulled one from a 67 and it was a couple inches skinnier than the one in my 77 F150

LMFAO u r right the axel is like 2 " shorter then the 8.8 ..... i new my luck was not that good !!!
gess ill sell this 1 and find 1 that is the right length

measure wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface of that 9"


A 73-79 9" and a 8.8 up until they went metric should both be 65" wms to wms.

Unless you plan on doing some major custom work to the 9", you are better off keeping the 8.8 and doing some upgrades. The VSS ring on the 95 ties into an E4od (which doesn't apply to you) and also provides the speedometer and ABS signals. If you find you need to keep it for the speedometer, then check here for ways to relocate it:
