Canned or custom?

Why custom verses canned tuning? Don't these companies spend time and money on engineering what's best designed for a specific vehicle. I know you're limited to what comes with the units but aren't you limited to what's available from a custom tuner? There are a lot of us out there that to be honest are confused.

Canned tunes are a safe tune for a stock truck.period.

when these are modified much more than intake and exhaust then to make the most of the combination custom tuning is needed.

Isn't manipulating the PCM what's happening regardless what mods are done? Are canned not as efficient at doing this?

Yes, both canned and custom change parameters within the PCM.

But unless you have changed injectors, turbos or or other large changes, canned tunes will work just fine.

You go custom when you are tying to get every last HP out of truck with all the different items you put on to work together

So let's call them box store programmers are good at maximizing stock parts but nothing beyond that? How are custom tuners better when most tuners custom and canned say rated 100hp and so on?

What do you mean by "box store programers"? Edge, hyper tech, etc? None of those have the capability to be custom tuned. It is what it is with those.

The TS based chips are what come with canned tunes and custom tunes. Each Programer(swamps, beans, Gearhead, etc has their own "canned tunes" By that I mean they have a set set of tunes they THEY have found have worked best for THEM on a"stock" truck.

As for the 100hp claim. any tuner with anything will tell you UP FRONT, the OBS is only capable of seeing 65 AT MOST with the stock 90cc injectors. Most tuners just have a generic add stating 25,50,75,100,140hp. The SuperDuty is capable of the 140 because they have the larger 140cc injects, but like I said, the OBS is only capable of 65hp with the 90cc injectors

yes egde, hypertech, superchips..... didn't these companies do the same testing to get optimal performace out of stock parts? How is swamps, gearhead and others calling their chips custom when they are canned as well? What would be the benefit of going with a custom chip? If they are all like I asked before minulapating the PCM the same way what's the difference. What's going to be the best bang for my buck? All these companies spend tons of money on how great their stuff is but are they really any different? I do understand the limits of egde and so on but is that really the difference? Are they painting a wall with a $5 brush or with a $100 synthetic one? So is the end result gonna be a nicer finish...LOL
Thanks for the replies!!!! Keep it going

Hypertech, superchips and the like, have you download your stock programing into the "tuner" then you download their tune into your truck. Anytime you want to change the tune, you have to go thru this procedure(about 2-5min)and you have to have the truck shut off. You have the option of 3 tunes(stock, tow, performance)

I have had a Superchip programer and I swapped it out for Canned tuned TS chip and there was a WORLD of difference. About the same as adding a whole other setting to the superchip.

With a TS based chip, you just turn the ****(less than 0.5 sec) while the truck is driving. And you can have 16 different tunes

For a stock truck(intake, exhaust and chip) canned tunes work perfect. You will not see any better results from custom tune. After all, you have nothing custom on your truck, to justify custom tunes

If hyper tech, superchips and Edge would spend as much time on R&D as they do advertising, they would have a much better product

well I did have about 7k added and wish I would have gone with a custom tune by the sounds of it. Having to turn off the truck off for adjustments is a pain. Do you know anyone that wants to buy and edge evolution thats about 1 month old...LOL

Custom tuning is also much nicer to an auto.also.canned tunes shift very hard at times.keep in mind fellas if ya can get live tuned, that's even better.the tuner rides around with you with his labtop and adjusts everything based on how the truck is running and how the customer wants it.
