Warranty Plate TRANS code: A = NP435 (N-1965 only) / F = Warner T-18 / P = F350 Warner T-19.

Warner shift lever retainer cap (8MTH-7220) threads on/off.

NP435 shift lever retainer cap (B8T-7220-D) has two notches, is retained to shift tower by two pins.

To remove this cap, it must be pressed down and held down while turning it to remove it.

People unaware use pliers or channel locks to remove it, which tears out one or both of the notches. Not pleasant! Now they aren't going anywhere.

Originally NP435: Reverse-down towards the seat while Warner T-18: Reverse-up towards the dash.

The reverse shift pattern was changed circa 1973, but I can't recall for which of these 4 speeds.

Note: There's another 4 speed: RUG SR-OD Single Rail 4 Speed Overdrive introduced in 1978 F100/150 300/302, TRANS code B

on one of the side of gear box (or trans. case) there should be an I.D. tag that tells you what it is. Your truck could have had a T 18 originally, but then later swapped by a p o at a later date. At which case the only way to know is to either pull the access panel inside the cab and look at the top of the case, or crawl underneath and look for the I.D. tag. I believe the new process tag is on the passenger side. Not sure on the borg warner.

IIRC the earlier T-18's had reverse over and up, by the dash.

The later T-18's (78/79?) had reverse over and down, by the seat, just like the NP435.

As long as you have access to the parts catalog to decode the Ford ID number.

ID tags usually long gone by now, and won't tell you much...if they are present.

To ID the NP from the Warner is a piece of cake, you don't have to go thru this rigmarole, or exit the cab. All you gotta do is look at the shift lever retainer caps. See post 6.
