Old Truck Wheels Can Go Bang - Please Be Careful

It happened to me this morning. Airing up a tire to allow me to load a project truck, the rim blew apart. This was not an RH-5°. The side ring stayed attached, it was the rim itself that came apart due to unseen rust damage. No injury or other damage, thankfully. Stu

Yikes! I'd say that was at least a 7.1 on the pucker-factor scale. Very "educational" picture.

Another demonstration that these old wheels are just time bombs regardless of appearance. Glad to hear that no one was hurt.

Wow, that's scary. Having it fail on the side away from the valve was fortunate.
So if our world renowned wheel expert was unable to catch this. Imagine what might befall someone less experienced. Those are very educational pictures. Thanks for the warning.

Now.....where are the rest of the pictures? You get a project truck and this is all you show!!!

Well, I didn't say new project. I'm just trying to rearrange the barn to get the daily driver in for the winter. This happened on the '50 wrecker that I've posted pics of before. Stu

This past Saturday I had four tires dismounted from wheels that I got from old_dan. I had to throw away two of the wheels because they were badly pitted and corroded once the tire was removed. The moisture caught in-between the tube and the rim, as well as the tire and the wheel bead, caused significant corrosion. I didn't feel safe letting others use these two wheels, so off to scrap they went.

Glad you were not on the road when that happened. Can you imagine the damage it could have done to anyone around you. I think you should go buy a lottery ticket you are one lucky guy not to be hurt.

I think what sticks in my head is how fast this happened, and without warning. I wasn't really at great risk of injury because I was off to one side and was using a long wand. But (note to self), I should have used the one that locks on and lets you stand way clear. The first thing I did after this was to (carefully) pull the valve cores on the others in the set that came with this one. Once is enough. They will all go away to return as your neighbor's new Kia. Stu, glad you're ok, and able to post this! I, myself, have the locking wand, and I have an extra 25 ft of hose with a ball valve on the "male" end. So, I can hook it up, and stand 25 ft away, cracking the ball valve open to fill... along with short section of chain and hook. I've got both rusted lock rings and widowmakers, though.
