Old Truck Wheels Can Go Bang - Please Be Careful
It happened to me this morning. Airing up a tire to allow me to load a project truck, the rim blew apart. This was not an RH-5°. The side ring stayed attached, it was the rim itself that came apart due to unseen rust damage. No injury or other damage, thankfully. Stu

Wow, that's scary. Having it fail on the side away from the valve was fortunate.
So if our world renowned wheel expert was unable to catch this. Imagine what might befall someone less experienced. Those are very educational pictures. Thanks for the warning.
Now.....where are the rest of the pictures? You get a project truck and this is all you show!!!

This past Saturday I had four tires dismounted from wheels that I got from old_dan. I had to throw away two of the wheels because they were badly pitted and corroded once the tire was removed. The moisture caught in-between the tube and the rim, as well as the tire and the wheel bead, caused significant corrosion. I didn't feel safe letting others use these two wheels, so off to scrap they went.

I think what sticks in my head is how fast this happened, and without warning. I wasn't really at great risk of injury because I was off to one side and was using a long wand. But (note to self), I should have used the one that locks on and lets you stand way clear. The first thing I did after this was to (carefully) pull the valve cores on the others in the set that came with this one. Once is enough. They will all go away to return as your neighbor's new Kia. Stu, glad you're ok, and able to post this! I, myself, have the locking wand, and I have an extra 25 ft of hose with a ball valve on the "male" end. So, I can hook it up, and stand 25 ft away, cracking the ball valve open to fill... along with short section of chain and hook. I've got both rusted lock rings and widowmakers, though.
