Confused over wiring options..please advise!

I have been looking through the various catalogs and magazines for wiring options on my 56. The stock wiring is falling apart and desparetly needs updating.
I have seen kits which to the amature seem very similar but vary greatly in price. Basically 12 or 21 circuit systems starting at about $175 and ranging up to over $600 dollars.
Like I said,...not knowing the products or having any experience I just don't understand why there is such a wide spread on price ranges.
Wiring is NOT my strong suit so I am looking for a complete harness properly labled on the wire with quality components.
I will be putting a Ididit shift, tilt column in the truck and a direct plug n play would be preferred and all the kits I have looked at say the are just that.
Can someone please offer up suggestions on what you used and liked or hated..
Thanks

I used this one I got off Ebay.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/EZ-WIRING-DELUXE-STREET-ROD-WIRING-HARNESS-21-CIRCUIT-/310737416772?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item485964b244&vxp=mtr
It came with all new switches so I replaced everything from front to back. It also provided circuits for pwr windows, elec fuel pump, pwr door locks, A/C etc. Pretty much everything I will ever need.

Not too bad to install but take your time and lay out the harness before you try to bring it to the truck. If you were in AZ I would help you with it...

I bought a basic Rebel Wire kit. I can't vouch for the other kits, but I can say the wire is high quality and the whole kit includes instructions as well as every strand is labelled. I haven't put mine in yet. Plan to this weekend.

I also used the EZ wire kit and was happy with it. I had a question about running a single wire alternator and called their tech support number and talked to a real person and got a good answer.

Rebel wiring makes a great kit. the price is great and they are very easy to install. Is anything in your truck 6 volt?

Could you tell us why you didn't like the Speedway kit? I've been looking at them, along with others, trying to make up my mind what to buy. I've bought several things from Speedway, and have always been happy with the quality.

This is the one I used and it is a good one. Wires are labeled every 12 inches and color coded. I followed their directions and it all worked perfectly the first time I tried it. All wires are American made and stranded with decent connections. I don't think that you can go wrong with any of the kits, but you don't need to spend $600 in my opinion.

I got the main harness out of a 1974 F-100 at the junk yard. I don't like that there are some mystery wires that don't go to anything but it's always worked well. If you were a little more methodical during installation you could undoubtedly clean up the extra wires.

They are a "universal" type kit. The fuse panel can only be mounted in one spot (above the steering column), or else the dash wires are too short. I would rather have it on the kick panel for easy access. Otherwise the quality seemed OK.....

I am another one that likes American Autowire, I have put them in several cars that I built and used to be a dealer for them years ago. Unless your a dealer Summit has the best pricing for AAW. I put the Power Plus 13 in my 48 and tied a EFI harness to it.

I used the EZwiring 21 circuit kit and was impressed with the quality and the price. Highly recommended. 12 or 21 circuit depends on your plans. Basic truck with minimal electric/electronic accessories used or planned, go with the 12. Planning on non stock accessories, AC, electric fan, power windows, door locks, security system, sound system, gps, MP3, smartphone dock, etc etc etc. then get the extra capacity of the 21. You can always remove the extra wires and fuses you don't need right away then add them back in later. Price depends on how "proud" the manufacturer is of his product, how many free harnesses he gives to magazines for their projects to get publicity, how greedy he is, a couple are very greedy IMHO.

I used Ron Francis, very high quality.
what ever kit you choose, pick on that you connect to the fuse box, much cleaner and easier than dealing wit a bunch of wires you don need.
