Mpg dilemma?

Mpg dilemma?
Does any body here get a hand calculated 20+ mpgs from a short bed, crew cab, 4x4, 3.73 gears, 285 tires. I used to own an 02 same package that got 450 to 500 from a tank. And used to own an excursion 2x that got 800 from a tank but that was a 44 gallon. Both with edge juice w attitude. I recently bought an 02 and can't get the mpgs up?

My CCSB4x4 3.73 gears and 285 tires can stretch out to 500 miles per tank but then it will take about 30 gallons to refill (which calculates out to 16.75 mpg). I usually don't run it that low though.....I normally fill around 420-450 miles and fuel economy calculates out to 16.5-16.8 unless I was hauling something.

I have never seen a Super Duty that achieved 18+ mpg on a consistent basis.
Did you recalibrate your speedometer for the larger tires?

I realized that I shouldn't have traded for an 08 but it was so smooth. then on my home I saw the mpgs at 12 and had buyers remorse. Now I want to try to get back to 20. I have a hunch that the CPU differences might be the biggest reason for such huge mpg variation in the forum. I think there are a few different CPUs for these trucks

They started introducing ULSD in 2006, but the system wasn't required to be 100% ULSD on the highway until December 2010. I think you're comparing your results of driving on LSD with the results on ULSD. I bought Stinky in late 2010, so I never experienced LSD. I never reached 20 MPG, but I've been very close many times.

Really? I always thought the odometer calculated miles based on direct data from the speedometer.

I found that humorous myself. While I run 38s with a dead on Speedo I didn't always and I'll tell ya the odometer wasn't even close. These trucks are smart. They know when there cold and warm themselves up and are temperamental when something isn't right but there not smart enough to do what is being claimed here. That or they are and I just happened to get one that's a few iq points short of the rest of the bunch.

Back in the "old days" when they were run via a cable the speedo needle was driven by a magnet spinning around the base of the needle and the odometer was a direct mechanical gear driven set up. The spring tension on the needle affected the reading by quite a bit after enough use. My '02 ranger is off by about 1/10th in 3 miles with the tires on it now but the speedometer is very close according to the roadside radar detectors.
That is why I questioned the newer computerized systems and how they are calibrated

My personal best was 20.7 mpg driving at 68 this was my average over the 1300 miles from TX to NY. I've never been able to duplicate that, however I did average 18.5 mpg from ontario to florida and back with 7 people and luggage for a week.
My odometer is very close I was out 0.1 mile over 21 miles compared to my gps.
I started tracking my fuel economy on fuelly.com and since june 14 I've averaged 15.9 mpg over 2183 miles. My high was 18 mpg and my low was 13.4
