EGR and tuner advice needed.

I have an 05 F-350. Had an EGR delete and added an SCT tuner. First question; To pass smog inspection I had to install an old valve, should I remove the EGR valve or leave it hooked up, and what are the pros and cons of leaving it as opposed to putting the blank plate back? Second question; I have 20's on the truck and have used the tuner to change the revolutions, what else can I do with the tuner? I would like to get better MPG.

Not sure what all you are saying but to pass inspection do what you have to, then when you get home remove it for next year. With the SCT and I assume no head studs, you can have custom tunes wrote to change the shift points that will compliment your tire size and hopefully improve MPG's.

20's are just rim size but what over all tire size diameter are you using? 35's perhaps?

I left my EGR valve plugged in ...heard that the fan may not activate without it plugged in? My MY 05 has the delete with no tunes and no CEL, I guess because I kept the EGR valve plugged in.

Leave the egr valve plugged in. With the delete already in place, the valve will actuate but no exhaust gasses will be able to flow. Leaving it plugged in will help fan operation.

Why would you change the revolutions due to 20" wheels? A lot of these trucks come from the factory with 20" wheels. The reason you would change the revolutions would be due to tire size. Are you running 40" tires?

Changing the rev's per mile won't correct the speedometer but it will help with shift points on the transmission and convertor lock up.

My SCT corrects the speedo, it's one of the first things the programming asks for before going into the tuning options.

My truck originally had 18's, the dealer I bought the truck from damaged one of them and could not find a matching rim so they put 2013, 20" aluminum rims on there. Already changed the rev's. It did change my speedo. As for the valve; I have not had one for almost a year. I have an inoperable one in there now. It threw a code so I unplugged it and reset the code. Just wondered if I should leave it or remove it and put the plate back in there? Also wonder what else I can do with the tuner to help my truck run better. It is set on the street setting. I do not do any hauling/towing, just to and from work. I don't really need that much truck but I got a really good deal on it.

If you did not change the tire size the speedo will not need to be corrected. As far as the egr valve, what code did you get? You really should have one is in place to get proper fan operation. I believe the fan will not hit the higher speeds when the motor gets warmer.
If the motor isn't studded I wouldn't get to crazy with high HP tunes.

I used the tire size and a rev chart to change that. I know it was off because of my GPS. What is studded?

Head studs instead of the factory TTY bolts. Not saying the TTY bolts are bad, many other diesels use them and have success with them. You can tell if it has studs by looking at the base of the heads, you will either see bolt heads or a nut on the stud.

Call matt at gearhead automotive performance and order his SRL tune if you do not have head studs installed.

So what is the advantage of studding? How much does it cost and is it possible for a novice DIYer to do it?

Advantage is they are stronger. Also you can get a good torque on them and they won't stretch. If you would be comfortable stripping your motor down it can easily be done in your driveway. Cost is roughly $1000 for studs and gaskets. Of course if your gaskets are good, you could always replace one at a time and torque evenly. Gaskets are around $400.

This truck sits at an airport in North Dakota half of each month. It is used to get me to my job site and sits there for two weeks with the occasional grocery store run. I bought it because it was cheap. Paid 9g for it. Had to do the EGR delete, replaced the generator and one battery, and replaced one glow plug. Not looking to sink a ton of $ into this truck. Sounds like the SRL tune is a good way to spend some money on this truck but studding it does not.

Don't stud it unless the head gaskets need to be replaced.
