Steering issue highboy

Well after lending my truck out to my son I got in it and the steering play is terrible. It's power steering. Anybody know how to diagnose this? I'm gonna have my son turn the wheel and see if I can find out what's happening or not happening... It's almost from 12 to 6 on the wheel! Scary. Anybody ever have this happen.

I would question the steering gear, have someone turn the wheel left to right just enough to start moving the wheels and compare the steering wheel input to the steering box to the output, as soon as the input shaft moves the output shaft should also move.

I found the problem. Its was the steering arn where it connects to the steering knuckle. All the bolts were stripped out. I installed a couple Heli Coils and life is good again for now. Now Im just dreading getting my smog and safety done. Thats my next challenge. Anyone have a shop they would recommend? I went to Matzens last year. Im thinking about going to Carbmaster this year.

WOW!!! Im so glad I came by to check out the group!! I replaced the carb today. Im still having issues with my steering arm. Had to retighten the bolts. I have to ad another Heli Coil and get new cone washers for it. I almost took it to another mechanic in Riverton to have it smogged (convenience) If you guys are happy with Carbmaster thats where Ill take it. If I can get it to pass My next thing is headers. I have exhaust leaks that sound like crap. She running real good though. No smoke doesnt seem to burn any oil. Im keeping my fingers crossed!! I may need to relocate to Tooele!

Hey Al!! Yep its down there. Good news and bad news. He says its running great and it passed smog but I have a bunch of safety issues to take care of. Overall Im happy to get this stuff done but its gonna cost me. Brakes, steering arm issue, light issues, rear springs and shackles, tail pipes. Most of which I could have done myself but Im running out of time. Its my daily driver once the snow comes. Im still stickin it out on the Harley. Should be great once I get it back. Im really glad he got it to pass smog.

That's good to hear they were able to get it to pass smog that's what I always had trouble with but they would make sure I would pass to bad about the other stuff. Are you going to have them do the work then so it will pass safety? Thank goodness this weather is staying nice so your able to ride the Harley.

Ya..I'm going to have them do the work....probably all of it. It will be nice to get it back and not have to worry about all of it. Although it's gonna hit the pocket book big time. How you been?

The trips was great. Got to see some family in NORCAL we haven't seen in a while. Oregon was nice too. My wife and I took the harley and had a blast.

How long have you known the guys at Carbmaster? What have they done for you?

That's awesome it's trips like those that makes me miss my Harley I only took 2 cruises with it. I have gone to them for 4 years now because they were able to pass me for emissions (Before I got the new plates for the truck) but they rebuilt my Carb & Put on a new Drive line, Differential, Help me get my new radiator in it & improved the Gas Mileage before they gave me some more power with bigger jets haha. But Kelly & Mike do one hell of a job Mike brings his T-Bucket to the car shows (I think he still has a picture of it up front) But they know my truck well even more now that it is Green.

Awesome Al! Mines been there about 3 weeks...lol. Went in today and saw it. Let them know they could finish it up. Paid them some money. Can't wait to get it back. What kind of Harley did you have?

You'll be glad that you had them do it they do some amazing work. I use to have a 2003 Harley Davidson Fat boy that I use to ride. I loved that bike I want to buy another one someday.
