shift lever removal

Anyone know how to get the shift lever off a 5 speed trans in an '89 F150 4x4?
There's a big nut on a threaded pin where the lever attaches to the trans. We've loosened the nut, but the pin won't turn or back out with mild use of a hammer(not ready to start wailing on it yet).

Need the lever off so we can locate the new carpet on the floor before we cut holes in it.

It was almost that simple, just not that obvious. Lever has a tapered pin in it where it fits over the stub shaft coming out of the trans. Had to remove the lock nut from the tapered pin and put it on the threads on the other side of the lever and use the lock nut to remove the tapered pin. Also found that on Ehow.com. Believe that's the first time I've ever got a helpful answer from them.
Thanks.

Thanks, we got it. WTF's wrong with a threaded shaft with a jam nut on it? Works on my Jeep.

Come on Walley, well all know "the Ford way is better". Don't believe me? Just ask some of those clowns in Dearborn and their questionable designs.
