292 Y Block - Engine Lifting Points

As the title implies; I'm considering pulling the engine in my 63 4x4. Nothing wrong with it, but since I have it down to the frame and engine, if I pull the engine I can get the entire frame taken care of and perhaps clean up and paint the engine.

I've pulled other engines by removing the carb and using a lifting plate in it's place. I'm not sure how that would work with the Y block as the intake manifold looks a bit different (perhaps that's just me)

So - Where is the best place to attach the hoist to the engine? I figure I'll drop the transmission before pulling the lump (easy access with no cab..)

Thoughts / Advice?

The tranny weighs about 150lb so be care ful with that thing
As for 292 I used the bolts holding the intake to the heads used longer bolts I was concerned with the weigh on the center of manifold
Also should say that I used a chain I didn't have engine leveling device

So you replaced the bolts holding the intake to the head with longer ones and attached the chain to those?

I don't want to remove anything from the engine if I can help it; I just want to lift it out temporarily to paint the frame and maybe the engine.

I suppose I could do all this without pulling the engine, but since access is so easy now..

In terms of the tranny, thats what a tranny jack is for...

(also works for the transfer case...)

You have a good plan taking the engine out and painting I just painted around it and now wish I had taken the engine out

A lift plate should work fine. Vacuum fittings are in the way on some intakes. Simply remove them if necessary. The carb flange shouldn't be much different from any other vehicle in that era, a very common bolt pattern.
