4 speed snycro-silent

Hello everyone. It seems that my 1951 F5 need a tranny overhaul. It is has a lot of vibration, leaks like a sieve and now the gear shift lever spins. Any body have a rebuild kit for this? Or should I look into some kind of a swap. I also have the PTO on the output.

Thanks

The shift lever dowel pin probably broken. It is at the base of the shift lever. You can unscrew the dome-shaped cover at the base of the shift lever to access it.
If you have an early T98 the gear pitch is backwards from that of more recent T98-A.

Open it and verify what you really need before calling Chuck of Chuck's Trucks, LLC.

Where do you think the vibration is. did you grab the driveshaft and see if it
has play in the rear main shaft bearing, thats about the only place for a
vibration. As far as the shift, I already know the top cover, the shift lever & dowel
are worn to a point, it may spin right around. Thats a common repair we do
on all makes. They get welded up and remill the slots and new dowel pin.
Dont worry this happens to the best of em no matter how new or old.

I usually make a new dowel pin by cutting off the non-cutting end of a worn out drill. I always seem to have one the correct diameter.

If you do get rid of the synchro transmission, several of us on this forum would like to have it, myself included. We all want to swap out our crash boxes for something with synchronizers!

I have not had a chance to investigate it much. I took the truck out for my first real drive. At about 30MPH it get a real bad vibration and wants to kick out of gear sometimes. after about 5 miles of driving I stopped to check things out. That is when the gear shifter started spinning and it was leaking pretty bad. I limped home in second gear. Love the 2 speed axle. It seems to have a lot of vibration in neutral with higher motor RPM. So I was thinking the pilot bearing and main shaft bearings are worn. Not sure how the PTO would effect things. I plan on pulling it and doing a tear down. Hope parts are available. So the pin is solid and not a roll pin? Thanks for your reply.

The pin is solid, 9/16" long and 1/4" in diameter. I trimmed down a longer dowel pin. Drill stock may be a wee bit hard for the other pieces. You could gently heat it to a "hay" colored temper if it was carbon steel. Internal parts for the older ones can run big bucks. Thus, look it over carefully before calling for parts.
The end of your shift rod may have worn to a nub also. It isn't hard to restore or even remake if you or a friend have some metal skills and a decent shop. I am pretty sure that the end of the shift rod was chucked in a lathe where it was reduced in diameter and simultaneously turned to a ball and then two sides were ground flat. Then it would have been regionally heated and bent to shape. Repairing the end will do fine.

If the pto has a shaft that's hooked to the hyd pump, and you have it in gear, the pump may be out of oil, causing the vibration.
