Thumbs down 2006 Ford Escape XLT/225,000 miles

We just got this out of the shop last week for a spark plug/wire/brakes.

Driving home Friday night it stalled whenever traffic slowed or I came to a stop sign. My son (works on tractor trailers) brought a machine over and my car showed "no codes."....he took it for a test drive and feels it is the torque convertor.

Just got off the phone w/our mechanic. He feels it could be a simple thing like an o2 sensor. He also said he could disconnect the torque convertor. I explained to him that I didn't want to "throw good money after bad" and have the car worked on again only to trade it in/get rid of it.

as you can see we've gotten a lot of miles out of this car...had we not just bought my husband a new F150 in June we would simply just go get a new car ---without much further thought.

Would a bad torque convertor show codes? What about an o2 sensor?

I really know nothing about engines and cars...just trying to make a decision on whether it is worth fixing or not.

Any advice appreciated.

With this many miles it could be a number of things but an O2 sensor should throw a code. The idle air control valve could be dirty and sticking and you could have a vacuum leak from an old vacuum hose. The catalytic converter could be plugged, etc. Stuff wears out and costs money.

You can't actually diagnose a car from many miles away.
Get someone to put a good (not "code reader") scan tool on
the car and drive it. A torque convertor locking up as you come
to a stop will show on live data. But like others have stated, it
could be many other things which can only be diagnosed in person.

Spark plugs were out. Was the intake plenum off too? (Vac leak)

IAC

EGR

A host of other things

Totally get that! Just went to look at a 2014 Ford Escape...trading the old one in for 2000. I think I'm getting a good deal.

You do realize that if fixed, even with 225K miles, an 06 Escape is still worth north of 5-6K.

The torque converter is not releasing from lockup. Could be electrical, mechanical, or a hydraulic problem.

Could put it in neutral as you're slowing down to see if it still dies. If it does its not the tranny. Also, does it start right back up and idle ok after it dies?

yes we were putting it in neutral to keep it going. When it would die it would start up again.

Regardless, they gave us 2000K for our old Ford Escape and I'm now driving a 2014 Ford Escape

What color did you get? How do you like the ease to drive is it as good as your 06? I am going to replace my 01 in a year or so for the wife's new ride.

I'm getting about 25 miles to the gallon, however have only been driving since Tuesday night
