02 F250 7.3 stalls -no reason
Hi guys
I really need some help here. I have a 2002 F250 SD 7.3 diesel 218,00 miles. Last fall I had to replace the ICP sensor (on top of engine) and Cam positioning sensor. (at 216,000miles) Truck seemed to run fine until this summer I had to replace the water pump. (I am sure no relation). However after installing the water pump the truck was running very well. About 2 weeks ago I was driving home got about 7 miles down the road came to a stop sign and it just stalled and I could not restart. It turned over like it wanted to start but didn't fire. I let it sit for a couple hours and still no start. I have a super chip so I scanned and no codes. There was at least 1/2 a tank of fuel. I had it towed to my house the next evening I went to look into the problem and it started right up. I had to leave town the next day so it sat for a week. Upon returning home I started it up and headed to the gas station to fill it up it ran fine. I got it home went in to load some things up and again it turned over and wouldn't fire , I again scanned and no codes. The next day I tried to start and it fired right up.
I need to know if someone can give me some way to diagnose what to look at first and so on, I am a little gun shy about taking off and stalling out on the side of the road again. Thanks in advance for your input.

If its an aftermarket CPS change it out for an OEM but generally CPS stalls can be restarted immediately. This sounds like an IPR failure. You can try cleaning yours or just replace it.
There are other possibilities but this is a common one for what you are describing. Especially at your mileage.

ICP: injector control pressure.
Measures high pressure oil pressure
IPR: injector pressure regulator.
Regulates said oil pressure.
High pressure oil is used to fire the injectors. A bad ICP will default to a preset value and your truck can run with out one or with a bad one. If the IPR fails the truck will not start. Sometimes they are sticky and will get stuck open resulting in no HPOP pressure and the engine not running. If stuck, it will sometimes move closed again slowly and you can restart it after a while.

02 F250 Stalls - no reason
Thanks to all who got back to me. I have been out of town for work and just got into my e-mails.
I am leaning towards the IPR as I changed out the ICP & CPS within the last
year (both OEM) parts. Is there any way to diagnoise the IPR further, also, if as mentioned the IPR is sticking can it be cleaned/ rebuilt or is it better to just buy a new one from Ford? Thanks

I had the same exact problem. It never really died while on throttle but after coming to a stop/ idle, it would shut off, then crank and crank, then it would sometimes fire up or it wouldn't fire until the next day. I changed out my IPR and it has never happened since.
Changing out the ipr is simple except the oil line runs right in front of it so its hard to squeeze a socket in there to remove it. From what I remember, the regulator was just over $100 at ford.
