To 12V or not to 12V...That is the Question
#31
I'm in the process of converting my '50 F-1 Flathead V8 to 12v after 13 yrs of ALL original 6 volt posi ground. My determining factor was not brighter lights or modern accessories. My truck started and ran fine for about 10 of those years. The past couple years, in an attempt to make it start at all cold or hot, I ended up replaced regulator, generator, solenoid, coil, carb, fuel pump, wiring, batteries, added pertronix 6v+ elec ign, starter, ignition switch, made sure I had good grounds and new large gauge cabling. I REALLY wanted to keep it 6v+ for the nostalgia and originality. I show the truck on occasion but drive it daily. I've replaced everything ignition/charging wise to no avail. So... I'm trying 12v to see what happens. I can go back to 6v+ if I ever choose to if I were to find out why it won't start with 6v+.
I definitely agree that if your 6v+ is working great then keep it!! I wish I could have kept mine.
Once I finish converting to 12v- I am hoping I can agree with everyone who said it was like night and day in starting etc. I still have to reduce gauges, etc before I can try to see if it starts better now.
I also definitely agree that if you like the 12v convert then keep it too!! I feel no one is right and no one is wrong. Each of our trucks are ours to do with as we please.
