Smile Ted James

I have a 2004 F-250 power stroke with the 5R110W transmission. The problem I am having is in the morning the transmission will shift through all the speeds including the converter lockup after I make the first stop the converter will not release lockup and stall the engine. After the transmission warms up a bit the transmission will act normal. The converter will lockup stall the engine in reverse and low gear or OD until just warm up then no problems. Does it sould like the TCC Solenoid ? Help

That does sound like a sticking TCC Solenoid or wiring issue...

Thanks for all the replies so far. This problem is concerning I have herd one other that had the problem and it broke the pump gear and damaged the converter hub. I have herd of Mark Kovalsky some where and sure hope he can point me in the right direction since everything you purchase these days takes Fort Knox to fund. Nitrogen has said to IM Mark I don't know what that means ? so until I learn the lingo I will have to wing it here. Anyway thanks again for all that has responded !!

Does the tow/haul light work when you press the button? Is the light flashing?

The Tow/Haul light does not flash and yes the tow/haul light works when pressed. I notice that cold when first started wheels off ground transmission will shift through all speeds with converter apply maybe 1 -2 shift cycles then when applying brakes converter will remain locked and if you force the wheels to a stop you will stall the engine. After warming up say just a minute or two the transmission will operate normal it's just the first cold start or leaving it sit all day. And thanks for your reply Mark.

I haven't seen this particular problem before. All I can guess is that there is a problem with the solenoid and it's sticking when not warmed up.

I will replace the solenoid and will let you know what happens. And again thanks for your reply and advise. Also there is a few valves in the pump is it possible for the Converter valve in the pump to cause this ?

Yes, that's possible, too.

Great post title. I passed over it quite a few times and then sheer boredom got the best of me.

Here is an update concerning the lockup clutch causing stalling the engine I found a technical service publication. "Torqshift Stalling in Reverse or When Coming to a Stop"
F-Super Duty vehicles built between 10/1/2004 and 11/30/2004 equipped with the Torqshift transmission, may exhibit an engine stalling or quits upon engagement into reverse, or coming to a stop. Trouble Codes (DTCs) P1744, PO740, PO741, PO743 orPO744 may or may not be present. This may be due to a Stuck Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) Solenoid. Verify the condition exists. Replace the TCC Solenoid This Could also be a cooler issue. Make Sure you flush the cooler lines, replace the remote filter element and check cooler flow. Clear codes if any and verify repair. Do Not Replace The Torque converter or the Pump assembly for this concern. USE Ford Part # 3C3Z-7J136-BA Part Name TCC Soleniod.

Since the vehicle in question does fall into the build date I am going to install a new solenoid and see what happens. I know that no one person can know every possible answer to every problem even the impossible can sometimes be a cause and I do thank persons that did respond to point me in the right direction Mark Kovalsky in fact did steer me in the right direction. All I had to do is a little more digging and found what I hope to be the answer. I will post the result as soon as I try the New Part.
