I have a 1998 F150 extended cab with a 4.2L, manual transmission. Is it necessary to drop the exhaust? Right now the end of the rear extension is positoned right above where the exhaust crosses over. Also, is removing the stub shaft for the shifter necessary? I have about 6" to slide tranny back. Thanks.
I just replaced my 4.2 auto trans and I will say, yes, you need to remove the exhaust. I didn't and then couldn't drop the tranny, and ended up cutting the crossover pipe. If I were to do it again, I would definitely plan to remove y-pipe.

You have to remove the stub shaft for the shifter . You can drop the transmission without dropping the exhaust , you will have to roll it on it side and then slide it back and then drop the front down , it's kind of awkward but it can be done.
