2.3l Mazda that won't start.
I need help, I am about ready to push this thing off a cliff. I am working on a 96 Mazda b2300 auto 2wd for a friend. His son was driving it when a loud noise, it died and wouldn't start back up. He had it towed to my house, I started to tear into to it and found it slipped the timing belt. So a rebuilt head, gaskets, timing belt, fuel injectors,
water pump, thermostat, plugs, and fluids; tried to start it and nothing. Started troubleshooting and found the primary coil pack was out of spec, replaced and still nothing. Changed out the CKPS still nothing? I have spark, I have fuel, I'm going to check compression tomorrow but the way the cylinders and pistons looked I don't think that is the issue but I going to check anyway, rechecked the timing marks they all lined up. Checked the fuel inertia switch not tripped. Could the PCM, or ICM cause a no start, and still be able to get spark and fuel?

When a Lima timing belt goes, it goes quietly, unless there is a backfire or similar as it goes toothless. They don't make noise generally, and most times they die on startup. Crank and no start, with possible loss of compression making it crank 'funny'.
That said, did you investigate any other problems that could cause the loud noise?
If the head had new lifters, they need to bleed down before you'll get compression, unless they were put in place without filling. It may sound bad, but it seems to work better if they are left 'dry'.
The ECM controls spark and injector pulse. Do you have injector pulse? The injectors are 'hot' and the ECM provides ground to complete the circuit and enable the injector winding. "Noid" lights should flicker if they are connected and the engine cranked, or you would feel the injector pulse as it worked.
Is it possible to wire the plugs wrong? Does this ignition system use the auxiliary shaft to set the timing, or sense cam position? I just read that the aux shaft gears that drive the distributor and oil pump are subject to failure. Never knew that until about last week.
