Please help diagnose problem

Hey all, my father-in-law has a 1995 E-350 cube van with a 460. The truck runs like crap, pings, and eats fuel like crazy. Pings way harder when cold, like full on rattle!

Van has new plugs, wires, O2 sensors, cleaned out EGR valve of carbon, tried a new ignition module, played with various timing setting. No pinging at 5 degrees retarded, but no power either. Van has 190K Kms and doesn't burn oil at all.

Instead of paying a mechanic to take shots in the dark replacing parts until fixed, looking for ideas or suggestions on what to check for from this knowledgeable group. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Just a thought, because you didn't mention it, did you check if there are any codes stored in the computer?

-5 timing??
that does not sound rite at all. check the harmonic balanced to see if the insert is bad and the outer ring was slipped . if memory serves correct, timing on that should be around 10 advanced.

Make sure you pull the SPOUT out before you set it at 10*BTDC with a timing light.

I talked to the FIL, he says there were no codes. As far as timing goes, because the van runs crappy I think there is something telling the computer to advance the timing or lean out the fuel mixture

What's a FIL? Don't take another persons word for codes.. most people think that because the check engine light isn't on there are no codes but that's often not the case. You dont need any special tools to pull codes either just a paperclip and pen and paper. The procedure is found here... Fuel Injection Technical Library » How To Run a Self-Test

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. Paul a FIL is just an abbreviation for Father-In-Law.
Are there any modules/sensors a guys should be checking out since it runs so much worse when cold?
