Don't be afraid to ask questions; that's what we're all here for !

You actually send it right down the dipstick tube. Ford figures that since you don't regularly add fluid, then there's no point in making it easier to add fluid. Just make 100% sure that you actually need more fluid, and that you're checking correctly. Here's the proper way:

1) Drive it around until it warms up (20 miles or so) (I never really do this step. I just check it after I get back from work or something (7 miles or so).
2) Put it in park. open the hood. Get back in the driver's seat.
3) Hold the brake down, and shift down through all the gears with a slight pause between them, then shift back up until you hit park again.
4) get out, check the dipstick. Add a bit of fluid if necessary. Repeat steps 2-3 again until you're satisfied. Keep in mind, as long as it's within the alloted area, you're cool. Don't overfill, though!

Take care and don't be a stranger!

OK, here's the end of my ignorance: I can't find the dipstick. Where is it?

It's on the left side towards the rear, between the engine and the battery. It should be a yellow loop, with "Use Mercon" or "Use Mercon V" written on it. The Mercon/Mercon V designation on the dipstick seems to be the generally accepted indication of which fluid to use - it seems that Ford randomly chose which vehicles to use which fluid in, and every 3rd party documentation will have a different choice, so it's best to go with whatever's on the dipstick. Mercon and Mercon V are NOT interchangeable, or so I'm told. Your transmission will lunch itself if you dump the wrong ATF in there.

Take care,

Just my 2 cents: That has to be the longest dipstick I have ever seen. Really, It's like 4 feet long or so......................
