Unhappy 1984 ranger 2.3l advice please!!!!!!!

Ok I'm new to this but here goes Ive recently been given the above vehicle and its in need of serious tlc & tweaking!!!!
she starts but runs eratically no ac or emmisions control to speak of looks like a stock engine with the usual oil leaks, the manual I have for her is not really helpfull in finding where all the cables and vac hoses go its been a lil chopped up under the hood, the auto transmission seems a lil clunky

I'd like to put another engine and or transmission in but have no info as to what will fit or what you can actually do to a Ranger so any help would be appreciated.

You can do a lot to this little puppy. I'd gut it and find one with the engine and drivetrain but a wrecked body. That way you will have all the parts you need for any swap. I am sure there is someone who can tell you chat years swap with this particular ranger. I have had 2 with the 4 bangers. One really sucked and the other was pretty good until it went south. My experience is to junk this engine and start fresh (or rebuild it). If you have time, some patience and a little bit of money, you could throw in a V8. This type truck makes a heck of a sleeper.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice!!!! my father inlaw gave me the truck when I started my new job, he had it for several years till he got a 57 f150, mine has sat for about a year but fired up as soon as I put fresh gas and oil in her anyway here's a bit more info

c3 transmission, I'd like to put a stronger rear end on it as we go fishing a lot and get tend to end up in some sticky places sometimes!!!!

bodywork is fairly good no rot on the bed or cab a few small rust holes in drivers floor nothing that cant be patched. it looks like it needs completely rewiring as the only thing that works properly seems to be the lights!!!
