87 F600, questions!!! :-)

Hi guys,

Just purchased an 87 F600 with a 9ft Dump bed. I'll be using it for general hauling (dirt, fill, stone, sand etc...) and coal.

It's got the 370 carbed, with a 5 speed trans and 2 speed rear... It's in pretty good shape overall just typical surface rust on the bed and peeling cab paint but almost no rust on the cab.

I'll post some pics one night this week...

Here are a few questions hopefully somebody can help:

It needs new brakes all around, they work great but are below the minimum and it needs to be inspected. The front are disk and will be easy, however the rear are going to be a little more difficult. I've done F250 drums before (have to pull the axle out) and I imagine it will be similar to that just bigger and heavier. Is there anything special about this?

The problem is that it's not the stock rear (at least I think not). It's a Rockwell with these specs:

Model: A383200H4568
Part#: 152178-0
Ser#: BXC93016128
Ratio- 538-750
Date- 93-298-2

So, will the brakes be the same as the stock rear? Was planning on going to the auto store tomarrow after work, but I may have to take them off before I go... Also, I drained the gear oil in the rear tonight and it was really bad, probably original. Does anybody know how much oil these take, and do I need anythign special (for the 2spd rear?) or just use 80/90 wieght gear oil?

Thanks,
Austin

Rockwell rear axle was optional. AXLE code printed on the Certification Label, post what it is.

Before buying parts, you're going to need to know the size of the brake shoes and what type of rear brakes your F700 has.

1980/89: 15 x 5 Kelsey Hayes / 1980/89: 15 x 6 - 15 x 7 Wagner / 1984/89: 15 x 5 - 15 x 6 - 15 x 7 Lucas.

Ok... So I got the drivers side drum off, went much better than I though. Rims came right off with one light pop with a mini sledge. I had to make a tool to fit the big a** nut that holds the hub on (didn't have anything that big) and it came off great.

I have the 15x6 shoes, the actual material only measures 14" long but I guess it has to be a 15" since there are no 14's.

The rear cylinder is slightly wet on the lower piston, basically it's a little damp with some dust that stuck to it... So I'm thinking I should replace this so I don't have any future problems? I'm not entirely sure how the brake system works on this truck but I think the rear cylinder is the parking brake... it's the one with the big reservoir thingy on the outside, which I'm guessing is the big a** spring for the parking brake??? So what's involved with replacing that cylinder, is there tension on it? After doing a quick search it looks like they are around $200, and I see rebuild kits for around $20... How hard and how effective is a rebuild kit? I wouldn't mind spending some time on it to save $175. Right now I have the parking brake off (started the truck release and it seems to be staying open).

Thanks,
Austin

I'm trying to figure out why my electric motor isn't working for the brakes, the emeergency/ backup motor.

I understand that it's supposed to work when you press the brake (when the truck isn't running).

I can get it to work by jumping the seleniod, so I know it's not a bad motor and I know I have power to the seleniod, just not sure what to check next. I know there is supposed to be a pressure sensor, just not sure where it is or how to check it.

The pic below is a plug/ sensor that screws into part of the master cylinder. I'm not sure if this has something to do with the electric motor, but the plastic plug is broken and it looks like someone tried to glue it together at one point (making me think it's actually important). I'm not sure what it's called and tryed getting it at the auto store but had no luck...

Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks,
Austin
