Distibutor/Timing problems???:(
Alright guys, Y'all have been so helpful in the past, So I'm gonna lay this on yall..
I have a 72 F250 Camper Special, 390 and C6. It had a 2 barrel carb on it but when we bought the truck alittle over a year ago it came with a 4 barrel intake in the bed. It had some kinda carbon build up in the ports, so my dad's buddy cleaned all the cooling passages out and decked it for me. Bought a Edelbrock 1405 with an electric choke off a guy on Craigslist who sais it was working when he did the full resto on his 68 Mustang. I sandblasted the 4bbl Intake and my dad shought some blue paint on it and we put it on with the Edelbrock Carb. Well i started my junior year of high school today and i rode the bus. Needless to say, It wont start. But the distributor has always been a pain in our rear and getting the timing set too. I read somewhere it might be the timing chain? Im not sure. We get it to where it almost starts or tries to atleast, and the goes back to trying to turn over and we got a few loud backfires tonight working on it. My dad's been workin on trucks since he was knee high to a grasshopper, and all its doin is stressin him out...Any ideas???

First off that 1405 carb is only rated @ 600 CFM and I don't think it's big enough for your motor. I think you need a 750 CFM carb. in my opinion but I hope someone else can confirm this.
Check for crossed wires for the backfires. It's always the simple stuff that bites you!

Your engine will still run but it might be too lean. If somebody else told you a 750 CFM was too big they could be right, or not. Check on the edelbrock website and see what they say

Your carburetor is the right CFM; it won't give you the symptoms you're having anyway. The first thing to check is the compression, next, the timing chain, then the ignition timing and related plug wiring. To check the timing chain, put the engine on TDC with the timing marks, remove the valve cover and see if the valves on #1 are both closed.

Sounds to me like distributor not installed in the correct clock position also. If you've had timing issues in the past the timing chain may be loose as a goose and created Pops installing the dizzy correct....but wrong. I would remove all spark plugs so you can spin the motor over BY HAND with a ratchet and socket on the vibration damper bolt. One of you slowly spin motor around. As the timing mark is coming around to top dead center the other one of you put your thumb over the #1 spark plug hole. If the engine coming around to the compression stroke (which is the correct spot to drop Dizzy) you will feel air trying to go past your thumb. This is the compression if the plug was still installed. Now you will know which is the compression stroke. Next spin the motor around twice slowly to come back around to #1"s compression stroke. As it's coming around that second time stick something thin in the sparkplug hole to feel top of piston. When piston is at the top of it's motion stop spining the motor and drop the Dizzy with the rotor pointing at #1 plug wire. Once started watch timing mark with your timing light at idle and at about 1500RPM. If the timing mark is bouncing around either Dizzy worn out or timing chain is shot. Let us know how it turns out there Son.

Teens at the ol school read motor manuals, today young guys just use internet and ask the ol dudes how to fix everything they read about 50+ yrs ago if you want the right info.
And we still use them to this day by giving out information we learn yrs ago.
Time to buy a manual young man that has most all the information you'll ask here, and you get the right info the first time out of it. Plus a few pictures to aid in your repairs...

Time to get a motors manual and walk through the process of installing a distributor. OR at least the way to confirm it is installed correctly. Your Dad may be a long time mechanic, but sometimes even the best have bad days.
Pull #1 plug(front passenger side), bump engine over slowly and wait for the big woosh of air to come out. STOP there. Find your timing mark on the balancer and then rotate it to just match up with timing pointer. Now you are at TDC compression stroke. Now see where the rotor is pointing. It should be at #1 wire on the cap. If not, make it so it is. Now it should start with little effort. With a timing light, adjust for about 10-12* BTDC.
The 600 cfm carb is just fine for daily driving. It should be very responsive to throttle. No worries.
